Innocent in every way, like apple pie and Chevrolet…
Produced on a budget of only $10 million, the movie “American Pie” debuted on July 9, 1999, eventually amassing over $235 million in box office revenue and evolving into a billion-dollar franchise. This unexpected success story unfolded with three theatrical sequels and four direct-to-video spin-offs. The film was a shock to many, including Universal Studios, which made an unsuccessful attempt to recoup its investment by selling off foreign rights. (A significant blunder, indeed.)
Instead of shying away from discussing sexual topics like many other teen comedies such as “She’s All That,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” and “Never Been Kissed,” “American Pie” boldly tackled the subject, centering its plot around five friends’ mission to shed their virginity before graduating from high school. (Regrettably, eating a warm apple pie does not qualify.)
The movie primarily starred lesser-known talents, but it catapulted the careers of Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Chris Klein, and Tara Reid, among others.
Plus, it cemented Jennifer Coolidge‘s status as pop culture’s ultimate movie MILF.
After the actress from ‘White Lotus’ admitted to exaggerating about getting lots of romantic attention following the movie, it’s clear that she did indeed reap the benefits of her role.
In her chat with Ariana Grande for Entertainment Weekly, she expressed, “It expanded the world to an incredibly diverse range of attractive men, and also introduced us to a younger generation of them.
Most of the main cast members reappeared in the subsequent films, specifically American Pie 2, American Wedding, and American Reunion. They were careful not to be limited by their well-known roles in teenage comedy films about sex. However, some encountered personal difficulties, such as Natasha Lyonne from Russian Doll, while others branched out into new careers, becoming musicians, professional poker players, or live commentators on The Bachelor.
Ever since the last installment of the American Pie saga, American Reunion, hit the screens back in 2012, I’ve been dying to know what my favorite stars have been up to! Well, grab your popcorn and let me fill you in on their post-Reunion adventures.
Due to his memorable portrayal of Jim Levenstein, Biggs is now synonymous with apple pies, particularly the one from Costco used in that iconic scene. At just 21 when the movie was released, Biggs subsequently starred in films like “Loser” and “Saving Silverman,” as well as the three “Pie” sequels. He later shared screen time with his former co-star Natasha Lyonne on “Orange Is the New Black.” In 2021, Biggs even hosted the game show “Cash at Your Door” on TopMob.
Jenny Mollen, an actress and comedian, tied the knot with Biggs in 2008 following their encounter on the set of “My Best Friend’s Girl”. They then became parents to a son named Sid Biggs in February 2014, and another boy called Lazlo Biggs arrived in October 2017.
In 2018, Biggs reconnected with his television father Eugene Levy and introduced him to his two children, jokingly noting on Instagram that it took a comedy great like Levy to make his youngest child giggle. Luckily, no pies were involved in the process.
Over time, Biggs and Mollen became widely recognized for their live tweets about The Bachelor. In fact, they co-hosted the after-show for Bachelor in Paradise with Chris Harrison in 2015, and were even asked to judge a group date during Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette.
In an interview with Cinema Blend, Biggs mused over the enduring popularity of the American Pie series. He remarked, “In various countries, people tell us they are the Sitfler in their group or identify with it. I encounter grown-ups who share, ‘That was my movie while growing up,’ and I’m left thinking, ‘Really? How old could I be?’
In his first on-screen appearance, Stifler’s role marked Scott’s movie debut and catapulted him to fame as one of the film’s standout performers. Subsequently, he starred in “Dude, Where’s My Car?”, “Road Trip”, “Old School”, and “The Dukes of Hazzard”, as well as three sequels titled “Pie“. In an interview with BBC1, Scott disclosed that he was initially paid just $8,000 for the initial film.
He gained such a high level of popularity that he was chosen to co-host the 2003 MTV Movie Awards alongside Justin Timberlake.
In 2011, it was confirmed by Scott’s representative to TopMob News that the actor chose to seek help at a treatment center to deal with health and personal matters proactively. The following year, Scott announced his engagement to Lindsay Frimodt, a former Victoria’s Secret model, but they parted ways in 2013.
After a brief hiatus from Hollywood, Scott returned to the scene in 2018 when he was invited to work alongside Damon Wayans on Fox’s series Lethal Weapon. This invitation came following the controversial dismissal of the original star, Clayne Crawford. In a statement, Michael Thorn, President of Fox, expressed his excitement saying, “Seann is an excellent fit for this talented ensemble. ‘Lethal Weapon’ is brimming with action, drama, and sheer fun, and we are eagerly anticipating seeing Damon and Seann together on screen.
Despite marrying interior designer Olivia Korenberg in 2019, they ended up divorcing in 2024.
In 1999, “American Pie” marked the second film directed by Klein, following “Election,” which was also a hit that year. His portrayal of Oz, the sensitive and musical jock, earned him the title of teen heartthrob. Additionally, his relationship with Katie Holmes, a star from “Dawson’s Creek,” further boosted his popularity. They dated from 2000 to 2005.
After two DUI incidents, Klein chose to admit himself into a 30-day rehabilitation facility on his own accord. In 2012, he expressed to The Daily Beast, “I understood that I needed to put things right and understand what was happening because the person I recognized was starting to disappear.” At that point, he said, “Forget acting. Can I even get out of bed? I was a 31-year-old man with financial responsibilities, a pet to look after, and my mother worrying sick. And yet here I am, in jail again. How did I end up here?
In 2015, Klein, who concluded his five-season stint on the popular Netflix show “Sweet Magnolias” in 2023, tied the knot with Laina Rose Thyfault at Montana’s Rainbow Ranch, five years after they first met at a friend’s wedding. Their union brought forth their first child, Frederick Easton, in 2016. Two years later, they were blessed with another child, Isla Rose.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at Sarah Michelle Gellar’s incredible portrayal of Buffy in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Initially, she was cast as Heather, the choir girl, but when she read the script, she found herself captivated by the character of Michelle, the unexpectedly sensual band geek. Intriguingly, she later reprised her role in the trilogy of films that delved deeply into Michelle and Jim’s relationship. (Did you know? Her iconic “Say my name, bitch!” line was spontaneously improvised during filming.)
Following “American Pie,” Hannigan, who was among the eldest cast members at 24, later married her “Buffy” co-star Alexis Denisof in the same year that the series concluded in 2003. The couple have since welcomed two daughters, Satyana and Keeva.
In the year 2005, Alyson Hannigan’s highly successful sitcom, “How I Met Your Mother,” premiered and continued for more than six seasons until it concluded in 2014. Throughout its run, she received two People’s Choice Awards for Favorite TV Comedy Actress. Additionally, in 2023, Hannigan made it to fifth place on “Dancing with the Stars.” Furthermore, she lent her voice to a character in the show “Fancy Nancy.
Thomas gained significant recognition among the prominent figures of the movie “American Pie“, particularly with his character Finch’s memorable scenes such as the school bathroom incident and his clandestine meeting with Stifler’s mother portrayed by Jennifer Coolidge. Interestingly, it was later disclosed that Thomas and Coolidge shared a close bond off-screen too. In 2012, Coolidge confided in LAist, “Following the initial film, Eddie moved into my home in actuality, and he was this young, rather pale lad who no longer appears so pale.
Given the association, it’s not surprising since even now, when people see Thomas, they immediately think of him as Stifler’s mom, a fact he shared during his interview with James Corden. As he put it, “People look at me, they point, and shout out, ‘Stifler’s mom!’ Especially the British…
Thomas later became a prominent actor in films like “Freddie Got Fingered” and “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” (and its sequels), as well as television shows such as ‘Til Death and CBS’ Scorpion alongside Katharine McPhee. His current roles include voice acting for American Dad, a part in the 2024 movie Junction, and a role in the 2025 short film Seeing, Hearing, Feeling.
Known for his roles in “Rookie of the Year” (as the rookie himself!) and “A Kid in King Arthur’s Court”, Nicholas transitioned into mature roles, portraying the virgin-with-a-girlfriend Kevin in the 1999 teen sex comedy.
Or:
In the limelight for his performances in “Rookie of the Year” and “A Kid in King Arthur’s Court”, Nicholas shifted gears to more mature stories, embodying the character of Kevin, a virgin with a girlfriend, in the 1999 teen sex comedy.
Nicholas shared with ReviewSTL.com that he didn’t receive much criticism regarding that specific project. Furthermore, the production team marketed it as a mystery cast, which led to viewers not immediately recognizing him from his child star roles. It took approximately seven years for someone to make the connection, and even now, some people are still unaware.
Beyond starring in three sequels, I had the privilege of being part of projects like “The Rules of Attraction”, “Halloween: Resurrection”, and “Party of Five” before taking on the role of Walt Disney in 2015’s “Walt Before Mickey”. Recently, I graced the screen again in the mockumentary “Underdeveloped”.
In 2007, Nicholas tied the knot with DJ Colette, and in 2011, they became parents to their son Nolan. The actor shared with TopMob News that at birth, Nolan immediately showed signs of being a potential doctor by grabbing one of the tools from the doctor’s hands. Their daughter Zoe arrived in 2016.
Since 2008, Nicholas has been playing gigs and touring with his group, The Thomas Nicholas Band. He frequently performs live shows whenever he attends different Comic-Cons across the nation.
Since Rookie of the Year has gained a devoted following, it’s become an annual tradition for Nicholas to throw the opening pitch and perform a song during the seventh inning stretch for the Chicago Cubs.
In the early 2000s, Reid gained recognition as a prominent figure in Hollywood following her role as Kevin’s former sweetheart Vicky. Subsequently, she appeared in movies like “Josie and the Pussycats,” “Van Wilder,” and “My Boss’s Daughter.” Reid also had notable relationships, including an engagement to television host Carson Daly in 2001.
However, as she found herself under intense media scrutiny, Reid diverted her attention towards reality television. In 2011, she participated in “Celebrity Big Brother UK,” and in 2016, she appeared alongside her boyfriend, Dean May, on “Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars.” Unfortunately, their stay was terminated when it was uncovered that they had deceived the show’s producers to secure a spot.
Reid unexpectedly achieved success when she featured in the 2013 film “Sharknado,” initiating Syfy’s prosperous six-part TV movie series. However, following an incident where she was disembarked from a 2018 flight before takeoff due to causing a disturbance as labeled by Delta, she opted to temporarily pause her acting career.
In 2021, Reid shared with TopMob News that he took a break because he felt it was necessary for his personal growth. He needed time to rediscover his inspiration and build up his self-confidence. This was particularly important as he had experienced bullying in the past, which left him feeling vulnerable, much like a bruise that needs healing.
Currently, Reid is regaining control over her career, with various projects underway, both as an actress and a producer. These include the psychological thriller “Masha’s Mushrooms” and “Doggmen”, which stars DMX in his last screen appearance.
In the late ’90s, Suvari delivered a powerful one-two punch, achieving success both in comedic and dramatic roles. This was largely due to her performances in “American Pie,” where she played Heather, the choir girl, and “American Beauty,” which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1999.
Following her initial roles, Suvari acted alongside Biggs in the film “Loser,” and the cult comedy “Sugar & Spice” featuring cheerleaders. In this movie, she portrayed one of the cheerleaders involved in robberies. During the 2000s, she starred in numerous independent films, and in 2003, she became part of the cast for HBO’s “Six Feet Under.” Additionally, Suvari reprised her role as Heather in two out of the three “American Pie” sequels.
Besides her notable roles in the “American Horror Story” series portraying Elizabeth Short, also known as the Black Dahlia, and Kyle Richards in the show “American Woman”, Heather Graham has also taken on the part of Nicole Brown Simpson in “The Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson”. In the future, she will be seen as Oscar winner Jane Wyman alongside Dennis Quaid’s Ronald Reagan in a 2024 biopic about the late president.
In October 2018, it was announced that actress Mira Sorvino had gotten married to Michael Hope. They initially met on the film set of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” with Hope working in the art department. This is her third marriage, having previously been wed to cinematographer Robert Brinkmann from 2000 to 2005 and concert promoter Simone Sestito from 2010 to 2012. In April 2021, Sorvino welcomed her first child, a son named Christopher.
An indie darling, Lyonne was thrust into the spotlight with her first blockbuster.
However, in 2001, Lyonne was apprehended for driving under the influence, which marked the start of a series of newsworthy incidents. Among these were a 2004 charge for threatening a neighbor’s pet dog, causing criminal mischief, harassment, and trespassing. In 2005, she found herself in intensive care, battling hepatitis C and a collapsed lung.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2012, Lyonne expressed that she hadn’t anticipated returning. Consequently, she didn’t pay much attention. When you dive as deeply into the heart of the matter as I did, you encounter a whole other reality where show business seems incredibly trivial compared to the rest of life on Earth.
She jokingly commented that playing a drug dealer in Orange Is the New Black was easy because of her past experiences, saying “It turned out all those past arrests were fantastic for my acting career!” to Out magazine.
Besides receiving outstanding praise for her co-created show “Russian Doll” with Amy Poehler, Lyonne shared that the series was remarkably personal. She told Elle, “It reflects my family’s story, my struggles with near-death experiences, addiction, feeling like an outsider in New York, and this industry.” Since 2023, she has starred in the mystery series titled “Poker Face”.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I found myself in a six-year relationship with the remarkable Fred Armisen. However, our journey took a different turn in 2021. In an enlightening profile for The New Yorker, I shared my delight in having a “wonderful new companion.” Shortly after, I graced the red carpets alongside dynamic media executive Bryn Mooser.
Every teen film features an enchanting, unreachable female character, and for the movie “American Pie,” this role was filled by Nadia, a Czech exchange student portrayed by Elizabeth. This portrayal transformed her into one of Hollywood’s most coveted women. Later, Elizabeth reprised her role in two sequels of “American Pie” and also appeared in films such as “Scary Movie,” “Love Actually,” and “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.” In 2006, she transitioned into a career as a professional poker player.
Following the conclusion of her three-year union with actor Joseph D. Reitman in 2005, Elizabeth moved on to date her dance partner from ‘Dancing With the Stars’, Derek Hough. Currently, she is married to brand strategist Simon Borchert.
Beyond her career in poker and acting roles in the 2023 production “A Home for the Holidays” and the 2024 film “Plan B”, Elizabeth is a passionate animal advocate who established her own foundation to combat the poaching issue, not just in South Africa where she resettled in 2016, but worldwide as well.
In 2025, she shared with People that they are constructing a refuge. They have been caring for a visually impaired black rhinoceros, and their plan is to introduce additional rhinos once they manage to expand the facility.
She also competed on the inaugural season of CBS’ Celebrity Big Brother, coming in ninth place.
In the movie, despite having minimal screen time, Levy made a significant impact, outshining every moment he appeared on-screen as Jim’s father figure.
Initially, Levy hesitated to accept the role that was initially given to Bill Murray, confessing he found the script excessively crude. “When I first looked at the script,” he clarified, “it terrified me. I said, ‘No, I can’t participate in this film.'” His manager suggested he should meet about it, and Levy responded, “Why? It’s simply too outlandish for my taste. This is a children’s movie. Why would I want to be part of a movie I wouldn’t watch myself?
Following a discussion with the directors, he understood that they approached the topic maturely, which resonated with him, leading to his decision to join them. Additionally, their invitation for him to freely ad-lib, being a former student of Second City Sketch Comedy, was a welcome opportunity.
He shared with Huffington Post that each scene in “American Pie” was spontaneously created, not scripted. His intention for his character was to portray an authentic father figure – a typical, corny dad who values his kids. He aimed to be the kind of parent that their children wouldn’t want to socialize with… The original version seemed a bit creepy, so he made his character more conventional instead.
Among the few actors who have been a part of all films in the franchise, this well-respected character actor later shared screen time with his son, Dan Levy, on their popular TV show “Schitt’s Creek.” This talented father-son pair made a significant impact at the 2020 Emmys by winning multiple awards for their work.
Most recently, he appeared in season four of Only Murders in the Building.
In the late 90s and early 2000s, Coolidge gained significant popularity, largely due to her roles in the “American Pie” movies and her part as Reese Witherspoon’s friend in “Legally Blonde.” Although these were supporting roles, she left a lasting impression. However, despite this, she didn’t secure the role of Lynette on “Desperate Housewives,” as Felicity Huffman was chosen instead for the part.
Beyond sharing the screen with Hilary Duff in “A Cinderella Story,” Coolidge has also graced our screens on various TV shows such as NBC’s “Joey,” a spinoff of “Friends,” as well as “According to Jim,” “Sex and the City,” and “Frasier.” Following her significant role on “Secret Life of the American Teenager,” Coolidge was part of CBS’ popular sitcom “2 Broke Girls” until its end in 2017. She also played Brittany’s mother on “Glee.” Moreover, she is all set to reprise her role for “Legally Blonde 3.
From 2021 onwards, Coolidge garnered critical acclaim with her outstanding supporting role in the popular HBO show “The White Lotus”. This role earned her a Golden Globe award and two Emmy nominations, highlighting her exceptional performance that left a lasting impression on viewers.
In an interview with MTV, Selma Blair, who played the role of the mother in the original “American Pie” movie, revealed that she leveraged her character for personal advantages. She explained, “Just like some restaurants might not be able to accommodate you, but then they recognize you and suddenly they can make room.” She added, “I went to purchase tickets for a concert, and was told all the best seats were taken. However, as a fan of ‘American Pie,’ I ended up with fantastic seating instead.” This suggests that her role in the film brought her certain perks.
