The 200th episode of *Chicago Med* brought back a familiar face – Nick Gehlfuss as Dr. Will Halstead – and set the stage for the return of Torrey DeVitto as Natalie. However, her return is under heartbreaking circumstances: her son, Owen, has been shot, requiring her to rush back to Chicago. Fans who have missed Natalie since she left the show in 2021 will be glad to see her, though the reason for her return is tragic. DeVitto recently spoke with TopMob about Natalie’s struggle to help Owen, reuniting with Gehlfuss, and the surreal experience of being back on set.
Natalie briefly appeared at the end of the last episode when Goodwin called her with the shocking news that Owen had been shot. This marked the third time actress Marina Squerciati has made a surprise appearance since leaving the show as a regular cast member. Her return is connected to a much more serious event than Will’s departure in Season 8, and she’ll be heavily involved in the new episode, “Horseshoes and Hand Grenades,” airing October 15th. You can watch the show’s 200th episode now with a Peacock subscription.
Natalie is already dealing with the unimaginable – her 10-year-old son was shot while he was far from home. On top of that, she’s expecting another baby and is going back to the hospital where she once knew everyone, but now finds it full of new people. Torrey DeVitto, who plays Natalie, explained how difficult this return to Gaffney is for her character.
Natalie is someone who always takes initiative, so she’ll keep pushing for what she believes in until she gets the answers she needs, no matter who’s involved. Being at Gaffney is comforting for her because she’s familiar with the hospital and many of the staff. While she encounters some new doctors, she also interacts with those she already knows, which eases any potential stress.
The preview for the upcoming season of “Horseshoes and Hand Grenades” shows some of the people Natalie will see again when she returns to Gaffney, including Dean Archer (played by Steven Weber) who will be working in the emergency department. The trailer also includes a quick, touching scene of Natalie tearfully reuniting with Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt), likely at the airport. Actress Torrey DeVitto spoke very positively about filming this reunion with her former co-star.
It was wonderful collaborating with Oliver again. He’s a genuinely kind and caring person, and I think he’s one of the few people who could offer Natalie any comfort right now.
Dr. Charles seems like someone I could confide in, especially with the upcoming episode and everything happening with Manstead. Even though Will never intended for Owen to get hurt – and they’re about to have a baby – it’s easy to see how Natalie would be upset while her son is in danger, considering their trip was meant to be a chance for them to bond.

It’s clear Nick Gehlfuss and Torrey DeVitto continue to have a positive professional relationship. DeVitto described working with Gehlfuss as “so great” and said they’ve “remained close and stayed in touch” over the years. Since leaving the show *Med*, she’s also become a mother, welcoming her daughter in November 2024. This led to a question about how playing a pregnant Natalie this time compared to her pregnancy with Owen during the first season of *Med*, and she explained:
Becoming a mom myself has given me a deeper understanding of the role I was playing. It raised the emotional stakes considerably, and I found I didn’t need to do as much emotional preparation beforehand, given the difficult storyline. Honestly, as a new mom, it was hard to even think about such a sensitive topic until I was actually on set, because you naturally want to shield your child from anything negative. Having my own child simply made the storyline much more relatable and easier to connect with.
It feels like ages ago when Torrey DeVitto portrayed a pregnant Natalie Manning on *Chicago Med*, as her character was expecting throughout much of the show’s first season. Now, around 2025, the baby Owen from Season 1 is a ten-year-old, played by Frankie DeMaio, who first appeared in the show’s 200th episode.

I mentioned to the actress that it was strange to see Frankie DeMaio playing Owen, considering the character didn’t exist when DeMaio first became known. Torrey DeVitto then replied:
That’s so strange, right? I was really surprised too! I actually had to double-check the actor’s age – it was shocking. It all clicked eventually, but it was a big surprise at first.
Will Owen was shot on *Chicago Med*, leaving fans wondering if he’ll pull through and return to Seattle, where he’s about to become a big brother. After bringing Will and Natalie back together after so long, it would be heartbreaking if the show delivered such devastating news! Here’s a quick preview of what’s coming up:
Don’t miss a new episode of *Chicago Med* on NBC Wednesday, October 15th at 8 PM Eastern. It’s called “Horseshoes and Hand Grenades,” and it’s followed by *Chicago Fire* at 9 PM Eastern and *Chicago P.D.* at 10 PM Eastern. You can also watch all three episodes the next day on Peacock.
