Chloé Zhao, the director of Hamnet, has addressed the online buzz claiming the film is a masterpiece. The movie, adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel, reimagines the life of William Shakespeare, centering on the death of his son, Hamnet, and its impact on the creation of the play Hamlet.
Following impressive showings at the Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals, Hamnet has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with some critics calling it the best film of 2025. A widely shared poster goes even further, declaring it the greatest movie ever made.
Chloe Zhao recently told ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley that while many films receive positive feedback, she’s delighted by the strong emotional response audiences have had to Hamnet. She emphasized how meaningful and valuable that genuine connection with viewers is. You can read her full comments below.
You know, I hear people say that about movies all the time, and it always strikes me as incredible. To actually make someone feel something – that’s what we’re trying to do, right? It’s amazing when it happens. How someone shows that feeling, whether they write pages about it, stay completely silent, or declare it the greatest film ever, that’s just their way of processing it. And honestly? I’ll gladly take any reaction at all – it means we connected with them!
Whether or not Hamnet is the greatest film ever made is a matter of opinion, but it’s a strong contender for Best Picture at the Oscars. This year’s race is very competitive, with other possible nominees like One Battle After Another, Sinners, Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value, Frankenstein, and Wicked: For Good. Even with this tough competition, Hamnet is still considered a likely winner of the award.
Besides potentially winning Best Picture, Hamnet is also predicted to be nominated for several other Academy Awards. Jessie Buckley, who portrays Agnes, Shakespeare’s wife, is a strong contender to win Best Actress this year. Paul Mescal, playing Shakespeare himself, is likely to receive a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Chloé Zhao is a strong contender for the Best Director nomination. The category is expected to be competitive, with other potential nominees like Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another, Ryan Coogler for Sinners, and Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme. However, Zhao has a real chance of winning, as she previously won Best Director in 2021 for Nomadland, which also took home the Best Picture award that year.
Even with several highly anticipated movies – like Wicked: For Good, Zootopia 2, and Avatar: Fire and Ash – coming out this holiday season, there’s a lot of excitement building for Hamnet. This suggests the film could connect with regular moviegoers as well as critics, and perform strongly in theaters.
Hamnet will first be shown in select theaters starting November 26th, and will then be released nationwide on December 12th.
