Chris Appleton Reveals Celeb Hair Secrets: Kim Kardashian & More

Chris Appleton’s number one job is to eliminate bad hair days.

Although he enjoys benefits from styling high-profile celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, and Ariana Grande, he remains focused on his ultimate goals.

Ultimately, I’m there to do a job, and I keep that in mind,” he explained to Eyal Booker and Lonnie Marts of Hot Goss. However, he also acknowledged that he often forms close bonds with his colleagues. “When you work with people for a long time, friendships naturally develop.”

The 42-year-old explained that their friendship involves simple things like occasionally asking for advice and sharing funny memes in group chats. It’s a connection they maintain even when they’re not physically together.

Because Chris has built strong, lasting relationships with his clients, he’s been a key part of many of their iconic looks – like when Ariana Grande popularized her signature ponytail.

He clarified that the ponytail wasn’t his idea—she was already wearing one. He simply enjoys taking existing things and adding his own unique touch, and in this case, that approach really worked.

He also confessed there’s a definite incorrect way to apply a wig. For instance, when Kim wore a short, black pixie cut to Paris Fashion Week in October, Chris relied on his guaranteed technique: “You have to flatten it and really secure it.”

But that’s not the only information Chris is privy too.

As someone who spends a lot of time observing how things really happen, I often see a huge disconnect between what makes the news and the actual truth. It’s surprising how often the stories we read aren’t quite what they seem behind the scenes – I notice it all the time!

He explained that while he experiences events firsthand, a lot of the stories circulating online aren’t accurate. He knows they’re often untrue, but the internet enjoys spreading rumors and exaggerations.

Chris understands the urge to fix false information about his clients, but he explained why he chooses not to publicly address it.

He stressed that his role is simply to style hair, not to engage in personal conversations. He believes a hairdresser shouldn’t pry into clients’ lives, explaining, ‘You’re entering a private setting, and there’s a level of trust involved.’

He mentioned that even while he’s on his book tour, he still receives encouraging messages from clients. They’ll often text him to say they’ve seen what he’s up to and that they think it’s fantastic, which he really appreciates, especially because they’re such supportive people.

Chris consistently seeks advice and learns from the accomplished women around him.

I’ve always tried to learn from others,” he said. “Whether it’s watching someone like Kim Kardashian build her SKIMS brand, or observing successful people like Jennifer Lopez and Arianna Huffington, I pay attention to how they approach their work and create things.”

He also confessed that while he enjoys his work, things like praise or recognition aren’t important to him. He’s much more focused on whether his clients look and feel good. That’s what truly motivates him.

Chris shares his ideas with clients, but he also receives a lot of support from them—many of his famous clients have celebrated his successes, like the release of his book, Your Roots Don’t Define You, in January.

Nicole, who has always loved her sister-in-law’s films, asked her a few years ago if she’d recreate some iconic scenes, including a memorable one from My Best Friend’s Wedding.

During a May 2024 appearance on the Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino podcast, she recounted telling Cameron, ‘I need you to run towards me from behind the luggage cart, towards the airport.’ She explained that she was directing Cameron, essentially telling her what to say while they were driving. She added that Cameron was incredibly accommodating and freely shared the story, which she greatly appreciated.

Luckily, Lawrence was free to spend time with Schumer, otherwise they might have missed out on a really special friendship! It all started when the Oscar-winning Lawrence emailed Schumer after seeing her 2015 movie, Trainwreck. Lawrence admitted she wrote, ‘I don’t know where to begin, but I have to say it: I’m in love with you.’ They began emailing back and forth, which quickly turned into texting.

Their friendship really became strong when Schumer casually invited Lawrence to join her and her friends for a trip to the Hamptons. Schumer was surprised when Lawrence accepted, but quickly realized Lawrence was just incredibly down-to-earth. She described Lawrence as ‘the coolest person you’ll ever meet’ and said she fit right in with her group of friends – she was just a great person to hang out with.

Everyone would love a friend who’s successful and established in their community! Jennifer Lopez and Vanessa Remini have been incredibly close ever since they met and instantly connected at the premiere of Man on Fire in 2004. Lopez described it as an immediate and effortless connection, saying she felt an instant love and joy being around Remini.

Remini was also enthusiastically cheering on Lopez when she performed at President Joe Biden’s inauguration. She told TopMob News that she messaged Lopez, reminding her of her Bronx roots and expressing how inspiring and beautiful her performance was.

Considered the ultimate celebrity friendship, this group has remained incredibly close since they first bonded while working on the Warner Brothers lot. According to a source, their shared experience on the show Friends created a strong foundation for their bond. They prioritize staying connected, much like former coworkers, and regularly schedule get-togethers, from casual happy hours to larger reunions. The source notes that it’s easy for them to connect – whether it’s at Courteney’s Sunday dinners or Jennifer’s pool parties – and that they all feel deeply connected and expect to remain close for years to come.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey have been incredibly close friends ever since they met in an improv class in 1993, and they consider each other family. Poehler, who has one younger brother named Greg, told PopSugar while promoting their 2015 movie Sisters that she and Fey are like “chosen sisters” and that their bond has given her a family experience she hadn’t had before.

Philipps described meeting Williams on the set of Dawson’s Creek as love at first sight. They quickly became close friends, bonding over shared activities like drinking wine, smoking, and even getting into trouble. That initial connection blossomed into a lasting love. Luckily for fans, we get a glimpse into their life together – from glamorous red carpet appearances and coordinated outfits to fun moments like dyeing Williams’ hair a trendy pink.

Drake and Adele, despite only recently considering a partnership, seem very eager to work together. After years of admiring each other’s music – they’ve won 19 Grammy Awards combined – they started talking about a possible collaboration. Adele mentioned to etalk that she’d love to create an official remix with Drake, adding that she’s a huge fan – she even bought the red coat from his music video! Drake responded with equal enthusiasm, jokingly offering to do chores for Adele. Instead of immediately recording, they spent time together enjoying a meal and a bowling outing. It seems a collaboration is definitely in the works!

After receiving great support from other women during her pregnancies, Washington has made it a priority to offer the same to her celebrity friends. She shared with Entertainment Tonight that she aims to have open and honest conversations, especially with Eva Longoria. Longoria greatly appreciated Washington’s advice when she welcomed her son, Santiago, in 2018, playfully calling Washington “basically my doula.”

Okay, so, like, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck? They’re back! It’s been over 20 years since Good Will Hunting won them an Oscar, but they’re working on this new movie, The Last Duel, and honestly, I’m losing it. The best part? Their friendship is still SO strong. Matt actually said they’ve known each other for 35 years – 35! – and basically grew up together, both totally obsessed with acting and making movies. He said they fueled each other’s passion when they were young, and that’s what made their bond unbreakable. Seriously, it’s the cutest, and I’m living for it!

The friendship between these two influential TV personalities began in 1976, while they worked at a Baltimore station. Although Oprah Winfrey was an anchor and Gayle King a production assistant, and they didn’t usually mix socially due to the newsroom’s structure, a snowstorm brought them together. Oprah invited Gayle, who earned $12,000 a year, to stay with her. The next day, they went shopping at the mall, and a lasting friendship blossomed over sweaters at Casual Corner.

I was so fascinated to learn how Meghan and her friend first connected! It wasn’t at all what you’d expect – no Wimbledon finals or royal visits right away. Apparently, it started just like any other friendship. She wrote on her old website, The Tig, that they really clicked at a Super Bowl event back in 2014. They were taking pictures, having fun playing flag football, and honestly, just chatting about normal, everyday things – the kind of stuff girls talk about! It wasn’t about tennis or acting at all, which I think is so sweet and relatable.

Even though Game of Thrones is over, the close bond between Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams remains strong. Williams, who was a bridesmaid at Turner’s wedding to Joe Jonas in 2019, believes the most valuable outcome of the show’s eight seasons wasn’t its impressive 12 Emmy awards. She playfully told TopMob News at the final season premiere that the show felt like a long, complex journey to help her find a best friend. “It’s been incredible,” she added, “and having a friend like Sophie through something as crazy as Game of Thrones has been a real blessing.”

Everyone’s heart probably melted watching Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively’s adorable reaction when their oldest daughter, James, recognized Taylor Swift’s song “Gorgeous” at a concert. Lively jokingly called the video embarrassing, telling Robin Roberts on Good Morning America that it perfectly captured their over-the-top pride as stage parents. But their genuine friendship with Swift – from Fourth of July celebrations at her Rhode Island home to appearances in her music videos – is something special and worth cherishing.

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon have a friendship that goes way back, even before their Apple TV+ show, The Morning Show. They first acted together as sisters on an NBC series in 2000. Witherspoon, who had recently given birth to her daughter Ava Phillippe, remembers being 23 and nursing on set. She recalled Aniston repeatedly asking about the baby, which felt strange at the time. Witherspoon was heading off to pump breast milk, and Aniston was incredibly supportive. Witherspoon said Aniston was so sweet, and they’ve been close friends ever since.

Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg have an unlikely but captivating friendship that began at the 2015 Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber. It blossomed further when they hosted the VH1 cooking show, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party. Snoop Dogg explained to LA Weekly that Martha is different from people he’s usually around, but surprisingly relatable. He said that despite their different backgrounds and generations, they connect easily because she’s genuine and doesn’t shock him. He described their connection as feeling like a deep bond, playfully comparing it to ‘holy matrimony, and not holy macaroni.’
