Emmerdale surprised viewers when Chris Coghill appeared as Kev Townsend, revealed to be Robert Sugden’s (Ryan Hawley) husband who he met while in prison!
But this isn’t the actor’s first time starring on the Yorkshire-based soap.
Though the actor had a short appearance in the Yorkshire Dales in 1997, most soap opera fans will always remember him as Tony King, the bad guy from Walford.
But Kev will be ruffling feathers in an entirely different way.
Everyone was surprised when Robert married another man, especially since he’d been chasing after his ex-husband, Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller), since coming back to town.
Among the most pressing questions on our mind was, what kind of character is Kev?

Many fans believe they have a good understanding of what Kev will be like when he’s released from prison early due to his illness, but director Coghill says the reality is more complex than it appears.
“People thought, here’s another baddie – but he isn’t,” he said.
Hawley added to the conversation, describing Kev as a multifaceted character with surprising depth. He argued that Kev isn’t really a villain at all.
He has many good qualities that aren’t immediately obvious. As you get to know him, you’ll discover there’s a lot more to his personality than what you initially see.
According to Coghill from Kev, this person is extremely dangerous. Kev wouldn’t hesitate to use physical violence against anyone, with the possible exception of Robert.
He jokingly called Kev a troublemaker for Robert and Aaron’s relationship, which fans affectionately call ‘Robron’.

I’ve been following this case closely, and Hawley’s comments really struck me. He said Kev is just… different from John. He’s unpredictable and potentially really dangerous, but it’s not the same cold, planned-out danger that John always had. It’s more raw and volatile, which honestly, is even more concerning.
He’s erratic and acts impulsively, often responding to things rather than leading. He’s a truly unique character, and despite everything, you almost feel empathy for him – like he could be saved.
Coghill explained that he typically bowls leg spin, often trying to create interesting moments. However, he believes his current approach will be particularly unexpected and surprising to viewers.
It was so interesting hearing Coghill talk about Kev’s time on Emmerdale! It really highlighted how complex Kev is as a character – you can tell there are a lot of different sides to him, and it’s making things really intriguing to watch. It’s like they’re hinting at a lot more going on beneath the surface!
“One day I can be a psychopath and the next day I’m doing something quite touching. Baking cakes!”
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1. Stream on ITVX.
