Okay, let me tell you, this new movie is crushing it. After just one day on HBO Max, it’s already at the top of their charts! And it’s not just here – it’s doing incredibly well globally on iTunes too. With Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal leading the cast, this R-rated rom-com is clearly hitting all the right notes with audiences. It’s a definite win for HBO Max.
The new movie Materialists has quickly become the most popular title on HBO Max in the U.S., taking the top spot from Weapons. Apparently, waiting nearly five months to release it on streaming helped build anticipation, as viewers immediately started watching the A24 film. Materialists isn’t just a hit on HBO Max – it’s also the No. 1 movie on iTunes in countries like Egypt, Greece, Ghana, Switzerland, and particularly Bulgaria, where it’s been at the top for the last week.
Celine Song’s new film, Materialists, centers on Lucy Mason, a driven matchmaker in New York City. Lucy is caught between two very different men: the wealthy and appealing Harry Castillo, a client, and her former boyfriend, John Finch, a struggling actor. This movie follows Song’s critically acclaimed 2023 debut, Past Lives, which earned Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay but ultimately lost to Oppenheimer and Anatomy of a Fall, respectively.
Materialists Became a Sleeper Hit at the Box Office
Critics generally liked the movie, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 78% approval rating and a “certified fresh” badge based on 292 reviews. While general audiences were somewhat less enthusiastic (66% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter), the film still became a surprising success. Despite a modest $12 million opening weekend in the US, Materialists ultimately earned an impressive $105 million worldwide, making it the first independent film of 2025 to reach $100 million. It’s also just the third A24 film to achieve this, following Civil War ($127M) and Everything Everywhere All At Once ($143M).
Since leaving his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers: Endgame in 2019, Chris Evans has starred in only a few films that critics haven’t panned. Materialists is one of them, along with Knives Out and Lightyear. However, most of his leading roles haven’t been successful with either critics or at the box office. Films like The Gray Man were forgettable, Ghosted was criticized for being uninspired, and Red One, his action comedy with Dwayne Johnson, performed poorly in theaters despite later gaining popularity on Prime Video.
Considering everything that’s happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s not surprising that Chris Evans’ Captain America will likely return for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. At the end of Endgame, Steve Rogers gave the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson, and chose to live a life in the past with Peggy Carter, meaning he’s now an elderly man. Unless the movie features an older version of Steve Rogers, some form of time travel will probably be necessary to bring back the Captain America fans are familiar with to assist the Avengers against Doctor Doom.
Materialists is currently streaming on HBO Max.
