Chris Hemsworth is now a major movie star, realizing a goal many people hope to achieve. He believes his intense focus was key to his success, but also acknowledges it sometimes created difficulties for him.
Chris Hemsworth recently talked about his career on the Jay Shetty podcast. The actor, famous for playing Thor and set to reprise the role in next year’s Avengers: Doomsday, revealed that he’s struggled with anxiety at times. He explained this began when he became overly focused on pursuing acting as a career. Hemsworth shared…
When I decided I wanted to be an actor, I became completely consumed by it. It was an all-encompassing passion, almost an addiction. I talked about nothing else, and I was absolutely certain that’s what I was meant to do.
Hemsworth admits that his intense ambition actually helped him, because he was so focused on achieving his goal that he didn’t think about how challenging it would be. However, he also believes that a bit of “crazy” drive is essential for reaching that level of success. He went on to explain…
We were pretty unaware of just how challenging things would actually be. But I believe you need a healthy dose of passion – almost a little craziness – to truly succeed in any field. It requires a deep and unwavering dedication.
Hollywood is incredibly competitive. Many people dream of success, but very few actually achieve it. Even beyond becoming a major star, only a small percentage of actors can earn a full-time living solely through acting – most have to find other work as well. It takes a real commitment and dedication that not everyone possesses.

Disney+ offers a streaming library that includes all Marvel Cinematic Universe content, featuring Chris Hemsworth as Thor. You can subscribe for as little as $11.99 per month with ads. For an ad-free experience, it’s $18.99 monthly, or you can save 16% by paying $189.99 annually. See the deal here.
Hemsworth admits this intense focus on his physique actually created new issues. He became worried that even a small mistake could jeopardize his career goals, leading to considerable anxiety that he continues to manage. He’s not alone, though – his fellow Avengers cast members have experienced similar struggles.
Even with small, unimportant jobs, I felt immense pressure. I constantly worried that one mistake, even in a single scene, would ruin my career, somehow reaching Hollywood and preventing me from working again. I was always thinking far into the future, imagining the long-term consequences.
Chris Hemsworth’s strong work ethic definitely benefited his career, but it also caused him a lot of anxiety. He enjoyed landing a role on the popular Australian soap opera Home and Away – it was a great start to his career. However, he soon became fixated on every little thing he thought he did wrong, and it consumed his thoughts.
Ultimately, Hemsworth explains he had to fully immerse himself in preparing for his roles, but then be able to disconnect from them afterward. He admits it’s still a challenge he’s working on, but it proved to be a successful approach, allowing him to achieve the results he desired.
