Chris Hemsworth’s Best Franchise Gets Major Confirmation From Netflix (And He’s Reuniting With a Marvel Star)

Unlike many other Marvel actors, Hemsworth has consistently returned to the role of Thor over the years, balancing it with other film projects. Chris Hemsworth starred in the action-packed thriller Extraction in 2020, playing Tyler Rake, a character willing to do whatever it takes to complete his mission. The film, directed by stunt expert Sam Hargrave, was popular with audiences and led to a sequel. Extraction 2 arrived in 2023, establishing a continuing action series for Netflix. Now, Netflix has confirmed a third film, Extraction 3, is in the works, and Hemsworth will once again share the screen with his Avengers co-star, Idris Elba.

Extraction 3 Officially Happening at Netflix

I’m so excited to hear that Extraction 3 is officially happening! Not only has Netflix given the go-ahead, but Sam Hargrave is back to direct, which is fantastic news. And the best part? Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba, and Golshifteh Farahani are all returning! If you remember, Idris Elba had a cool cameo in Extraction 2, setting up some interesting possibilities for his character, and I can’t wait to see what they do with him this time around.

She also highlighted the privilege of collaborating again with Sam Hargrave, Chris Hemsworth, and the talented team behind the successful and popular action franchise.

In Extraction 2, Idris Elba’s character recruits Chris Hemsworth’s Rake for a central mission in the sequel. The film concludes with Elba helping Rake escape from prison and offering him another job, setting the stage for a third movie. It’s still unknown which organization Elba represents or who his ultimate boss is – a mysterious figure he describes as a formidable and dangerous person in the final moments of the film.

Since it first appeared, the Extraction series has become a successful action franchise for Netflix. While it may not be as widely known as John Wick, it delivers the same kind of fast-paced, non-stop action. The films are famous for their over-the-top violence and Chris Hemsworth’s character’s ability to turn almost anything—even a rake, as seen in the first movie—into a weapon.

I’m so excited about where the Extraction universe is going! Because the first two movies did so well, Netflix is really building things out. They’ve announced a spin-off movie called Tygo, which is going to be set in South Korea and star Don Lee. It’s about his character, a former child soldier turned mercenary, getting revenge after a job goes wrong, and it’ll also feature Lee Jin-uk from Squid Game and Lisa from BLACKPINK! Plus, there’s a TV series in the works, Mercenary: An Extraction Series, with Omar Sy, Boyd Holbrook, and Natalie Dormer. It follows a mercenary on a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. It’s going to be amazing to see all these different stories within the same world!
