Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction Spinoff Gets a Huge Update

Netflix has given fans a first glimpse of a new series based in the universe of its hit film, Extraction. Chris Hemsworth, known for his role as Thor, first partnered with Netflix in 2020 for the original Extraction movie, which was a huge success. A sequel, Extraction 2, followed soon after, and now a spin-off series is being developed, featuring a well-known actor.

The film is set within the world of the Extraction franchise. Omar Sy, known for his roles in Lupin and The Intouchables, plays a mercenary tasked with a risky hostage rescue operation in Libya. A still from the movie shows Sy, wearing a tactical vest, standing before a brick wall.

Glen Mazzara, known for his work on shows like The Shield and The Walking Dead, is leading the new thriller series Mercenary as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Filmed in Ireland and Morocco, the epic, global story will unfold over eight episodes. Louise Hooper (known for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Sandman) and Tim Southam (Foundation, ONE PIECE) will each direct four episodes.

Lupin’s Omar Sy Joins Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction Universe

Omar Sy stars as Assane Diop, a skilled thief, in the popular French thriller Lupin. The show debuted on Netflix in 2021 and lasted for three seasons, quickly becoming a huge hit. Now, he’s taking on a new role as a soldier for hire in the film Mercenary.

Honestly, Mercenary is the most ambitious project I’ve ever been a part of. The amount of planning that went into it was huge! It was a bit overwhelming, actually, walking onto set and seeing everything – the work of so many people – finally coming together to tell this story. It was incredible.

He explained that after they filmed the first shot, he immediately knew it was perfect. He turned to Hooper and declared, ‘That’s it! We’ve got everything we need!’ It was a long-held ambition finally realized.

Mazarra also complimented Omar Sy’s performance, noting that Sy brings a genuine warmth and likability to a character facing incredibly difficult circumstances. He seamlessly navigates the diverse settings of the series while always maintaining a sense of being an observer, and Mazarra believes Sy is truly the emotional center of the show.

Extraction Universe Reunites Chris Hemsworth and the Russo Brothers

AGBO, the production company founded by Joe and Anthony Russo, is producing Mercenary. The Russo Brothers previously worked with Chris Hemsworth on the Extraction films, as well as the blockbuster Avengers movies Infinity War and Endgame.

According to Mazarra, Joe and Anthony Russo are skilled at directing large ensembles in both television and film. He described their Extraction stories as captivating and action-packed. He was thrilled to apply their techniques to a story he’s passionate about and with characters he cares for, jokingly saying he ‘learned from the best’.

A new spin-off film is in the works for the Extraction series. Titled TYGO, the movie will be set in South Korea and star Don Lee (known for The Roundup films, Eternals, and Train to Busan), Lee Jin-uk (Squid Game, Sweet Home), and BLACKPINK’s Lisa (The White Lotus).

The cast of Mercenary includes Omar Sy, Boyd Holbrook, Natalie Dormer, Waleed Zuaiter, Ed Speleers, Sacha Dhawan, Ross McCall, Pip Torrens, Sam Woolf, Michael Zananiri, Riyad Sliman, Muhannad Ben Amor, Aaron Heffernan, Jojo Macari, Theo Ogundipe, and Emma Appleton.
