After switching from Prime Video to Peacock earlier this month, the sci-fi action film starring Chris Pratt is proving to be a big success, significantly boosting the popularity of the four-year-old series.
Despite being released earlier, The Tomorrow War just made it into the Top 10 Movies on the streaming service in the US, currently at number 8. It’s behind several popular animated films like three Despicable Me movies, The Proposal, Shark Tale, and Shrek Forever After, as well as Bugonia, which has been the most popular movie for the last week thanks to its new collaboration between Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone.
The Tomorrow War Was Originally a Prime Video Exclusive
Chris McKay directed The Tomorrow War in 2021. Initially planned for release in theaters by Paramount, the film ended up premiering as a Prime Video exclusive due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Its $200 million budget made it one of the costliest movies ever released directly on a streaming platform.
Chris Pratt headlines a talented cast including Yvonne Strahovski, J.K. Simmons, Sam Richardson, Edwin Hodge, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Keith Powers. Together, they star in The Tomorrow War, playing both soldiers and ordinary people sent to the future to combat a dangerous alien invasion.
While critics weren’t very impressed with The Tomorrow War – it currently has a 52% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – that didn’t stop it from becoming the biggest movie ever on Amazon Prime Video.
After the film The Tomorrow War gained a lot of viewers, Amazon and Skydance started discussing a follow-up movie. Chris McKay and writer Zach Dean were expected to return, along with the original actors. However, five years later, there haven’t been any significant announcements about The Tomorrow War 2, making it uncertain if the sequel will ever happen.
Chris Pratt began a working relationship with Amazon with the film The Tomorrow War. He then starred in the action series The Terminal List, which has already finished filming its second season. He’s also reprising his role for a prequel spinoff, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, scheduled for release in 2025.
I’m really excited about my favorite actor’s next project! It’s another sci-fi film called Mercy, and thankfully, this one will be hitting theaters – a nice change from The Tomorrow War, which went straight to streaming. Amazon MGM Studios has announced it’ll be released on January 23rd, and I’ve already marked my calendar!
The upcoming film, Mercy, centers around a man accused of killing his wife. He has just 90 minutes to convince the highly intelligent artificial intelligence Judge – a system he previously supported – that he’s innocent, or it will decide his fate.
The Tomorrow War is currently streaming on both Peacock and Prime Video.
