Streaming services offer incredible access to movies and TV shows, even making older favorites easy to find. However, when a show or movie is removed, it can be tough to watch it again. That’s why people pay attention to the monthly updates from streaming platforms, to see what’s being added and taken away. Good news for fans of Christian Bale: one of his lesser-known films is returning to a streaming service at the start of the new year!
Christian Bale’s 2002 sci-fi action movie, Equilibrium, is coming to Paramount+ on January 1st after being unavailable on streaming for years. Previously, fans could only find it on DVD/Blu-ray or through rentals. Now, more people can watch it, and fans of action-packed films like John Wick will definitely enjoy its incredible fight scenes.
Equilibrium Was Ahead of It’s Time
Kurt Wimmer’s 2002 film, Equilibrium, is now considered visionary, though it wasn’t well-received upon its initial release. The movie takes place in Libria, a futuristic city where peace is enforced at a steep cost: citizens must take a drug called Prozium to suppress all emotions, and art is forbidden. Breaking these rules, especially by showing feeling, is a crime punishable by death. Cleric John Preston (Christian Bale) is a law enforcer who begins to question the government when he accidentally skips a dose of Prozium and experiences emotions for the first time.
The movie is a visual treat, boasting a sleek, futuristic style. It features a unique martial art created just for the film, called Gun Kata, which makes the action sequences both powerful and graceful, creating a truly grand spectacle. Christian Bale’s character is a force to be reckoned with, essentially fighting as a one-man army and proving incredibly skilled throughout the film.
Although Equilibrium boasts an interesting idea, stylish visuals, and exciting action, it didn’t initially impress audiences, mainly because it felt too similar to The Matrix. The fight style, ‘Gun Kata,’ and the long black coats worn by the clerics are reminiscent of elements from that film. However, these are mostly surface-level similarities; the two movies actually tell very different stories about control and monitoring. Over time, Equilibrium has gained a new audience and a more positive reputation. Now that it’s available on Paramount+, even more people have the chance to discover it and perhaps appreciate it for what it is.
Equilibrium is now streaming on Paramount+.
