Christmas Karma director reveals the emotional moment that reduced a crew member to tears

Gurinder Chadha’s latest film, Christmas Karma, hasn’t received great reviews – one critic even gave it a zero-star rating – but it’s still connected with audiences since its release in UK cinemas over the weekend.

The actress described a particularly moving scene where Sood, the film’s Scrooge-like character played by Kunal Nayyar, confronts his past. He sees a vision of his former love as an adult, and the sadness of the moment – with both characters in tears – was incredibly touching.

While we were filming, I realized the camera operator was really emotional. He was crying, and I asked if he was alright. He just sobbed and said he was fine. It hit me then – if the camera guy is moved to tears, we must be doing something powerful.

Despite the emotional scenes, actor Kunal Nayyar, famous for playing Raj in The Big Bang Theory, said making the movie was a really enjoyable experience.

He described the experience as surprisingly joyful, even during the toughest moments. It wasn’t simply a case of some days being good and others bad; he felt like getting through each day and completing the film was a small miracle.

The movie features a wonderfully diverse cast, including Hugh Bonneville, Eva Longoria, Billy Porter, and Boy George as ghosts. Nayyar especially seemed to enjoy working with Danny Dyer, who plays a taxi driver with a surprising talent – he sings!

He commented that it was really nice to be around someone so genuine and comfortable being themselves. He also described the frenzy that would happen when they filmed in London, with crowds gathering around Danny Dyer – people just really loved him and were eager to catch a glimpse.

Let me tell you, filming with him was an event every single time. Seriously, whether it was the cast and crew, random people on the street, or even the paparazzi, everyone was buzzing because he’s a true icon, especially here. I quickly developed a real respect and fondness for him, and we became quite close during the shoot.
