An interesting, unrevealed story from The Big Bang Theory that was ultimately dismissed by creator Chuck Lorre actually provided the ideal foundation for its spin-off, Young Sheldon. When CBS decided to expand the popular franchise in 2017, Young Sheldon was created as a prequel, showing Sheldon’s childhood in 1990s Texas. The show largely delivered on that promise, drawing inspiration from the quirky stories Sheldon himself used to tell about his family and upbringing. It eventually became the most-watched sitcom on network television, especially after Jim Parsons left The Big Bang Theory and the original series ended.
After seven seasons, Young Sheldon concluded as the show moved beyond its initial focus. The story expanded to include the entire Cooper family, and they became just as popular with viewers as young Sheldon himself. This led to Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, a new prequel spinoff – the third connected to The Big Bang Theory. Although this new show has its own merits, it feels disconnected from the original series, and fans who loved the characters in Pasadena are hoping for a spinoff that more closely ties back to them. Fortunately, the Big Bang Theory universe has a clear opportunity to deliver that.
Chuck Lorre Didn’t Want To Introduce Howard’s Dad In The Big Bang Theory

To make the characters more well-rounded, the show The Big Bang Theory also introduced the families of the main friends. The Wolowitz family was particularly interesting, mainly because Howard lived with his mother for a long time. However, the biggest mystery surrounded his father. The show had an opportunity to finally explain what happened to Mr. Wolowitz – why he left his family and what became of him after that – but never did.
According to Jessica Radloff’s book, The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series, the show’s co-producer, Steve Molaro, shared that the writers discussed bringing Howard’s father into the show. At the time, Howard’s mother was already part of the storyline, though she was never seen on screen. Despite enthusiasm from many, including actor Simon Helberg, creator Chuck Lorre rejected the idea, as Molaro explained.
We discussed the idea several times and even brainstormed ways to include it in our stories, but eventually, Chuck decided he wasn’t interested in pursuing it anymore.
Given how much Young Sheldon focused on developing Lance Barber’s character, George Cooper – who was often the target of jokes on The Big Bang Theory – it’s surprising the show didn’t explore the mystery surrounding Howard Wolowitz’s family. The Big Bang Theory briefly touched on this when Howard’s half-brother, Josh, appeared in an episode. However, the actor who played Josh, Matt Bennett, only appeared once and wasn’t brought back.
Mr. Wolowitz’s Mystery Is The Perfect Launching Pad For Young Howard

In an interview featured in Radloff’s book, Helberg expressed regret that the show never revealed the solution to the mystery. Considering this, and the continued fan desire for more stories set in the Big Bang Theory universe, a prequel series focusing on Howard’s early life – tentatively titled Young Howard – feels like a natural next step for the franchise. This series could explore Howard’s childhood with both of his parents, showing the family dynamics before and after his father left, and potentially beyond.
Just like the finale of Young Sheldon used a flashforward, the Young Howard series could also jump ahead to after The Big Bang Theory to finally explain what happened to Howard’s missing father. This will be a more straightforward task for the writers than Young Sheldon because they have more creative freedom. Unlike Sheldon’s stories about his family on The Big Bang Theory, which forced the prequel to address specific, sometimes awkward, plots, the mystery of Howard’s father allows for a more organic storyline.
Interestingly, Young Sheldon season 2 gave us a glimpse of Howard’s childhood, suggesting he was just as playful and mischievous then as he was in The Big Bang Theory. It would be great to see more of that, alongside an explanation of what happened with his father – that would be a fantastic direction for the next origin story about the character.
The Big Bang Theory & Young Sheldon stream on HBO Max.
