Cillian Murphy Reacts to Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’s Ending

Spoilers for Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man ahead.

In the bleak midwinter, Tommy Shelby fought his last battle.

Even after Cillian Murphy‘s character, Tommy Shelby, seemingly left his criminal life behind when Peaky Blinders finished in 2022, the consequences of his past finally caught up to him in the new film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. In the 1940s-set story, Tommy is killed while stopping a Nazi plan that could have led to a German victory in the war. Murphy has said he always believed Tommy’s death was unavoidable, and there was never a possibility of him surviving the events of the film.

“I don’t believe it will continue,” Cillian told TopMob News in a private conversation. “We all had a feeling this would be the end.”

As a longtime fan, that final chapter, written by Steven Knight himself, really hit me. It felt like Tommy’s story perfectly came full circle, with his son, Duke Shelby – played brilliantly by Barry Keoghan – taking over the Peaky Blinders. It was heartbreaking, but also strangely fitting, that Duke was the one who ultimately carried out Tommy’s final wish. After being shot by Beckett, Tim Roth’s character, it became clear Tommy wouldn’t make it, and he asked Duke to finish the job, even though it clearly pained him.

Cillian explained that he was really impressed with how Steve resolved everything, and he thought it was perfect that the story ultimately focused on a father and son relationship, given that family was a central theme throughout the entire show.

Staying true to the spirit of Peaky Blinders, family remains central in The Immortal Man. With only Ada Shelby Thorne (Sophie Rundle) remaining of the original five Shelby siblings – John Shelby (Joe Cole) died in season four, Finn Shelby (Harry Kirton) is still estranged, and Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) has passed away – the family’s influence has waned. To make matters worse, the new Peaky Blinders leader, Duke, is causing trouble in Small Heath, and Beckett is attempting to involve his gang with the Nazis.

When Tommy returns to the conflict at Ada’s request, it’s too late to prevent a tragedy. Duke disobeys Beckett’s command to assassinate his aunt, a supporter of the Nazis, and ends up killing her himself. This event brings father and son together, allowing them to begin plotting against Beckett.

Even though his character, Tommy, didn’t survive, Cillian Murphy feels that The Immortal Man—which is now available on Netflix—provides a satisfying conclusion to the anti-hero’s journey.

He described the experience as incredibly rewarding, saying he always enjoys working with strong writing. He feels fortunate to have spent a significant amount of time – 36 hours for television and two hours for a film – developing the character, and he’s very pleased with the result.

As expected from Peaky Blinders, family remains central to the story in The Immortal Man. With only Ada Shelby Thorne (Sophie Rundle) still living in Birmingham – John Shelby (Joe Cole) died in season four, and the film confirms Finn Shelby (Harry Kirton) is still estranged, while Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) has passed away – the Shelby family has clearly lost some of its power and influence.

Tommy’s son, Duke, who he’s been separated from, and a new group of Peaky Blinders are causing trouble in their old neighborhood. At the same time, Beckett is trying to recruit Tommy to ruin the British economy and get the country out of the war.

When Tommy returns to the conflict, urged by Ada, it’s too late to prevent tragedy. Duke disobeys Beckett’s order to kill his aunt, a supporter of the Nazis, and ends up shooting her while trying to warn her. This shocking event brings father and son together, and they begin to formulate a plan to overthrow Beckett.

Even though Tommy’s character couldn’t survive the storyline, Cillian Murphy feels that The Immortal Man—which is now available on Netflix—provides a satisfying conclusion to the anti-hero’s journey.

He described the experience as incredibly rewarding. He enjoys working with well-written material, which has allowed him to spend a significant amount of time – 36 hours for television and two hours for a film – developing a particular character. He expressed a great deal of pride in the final result.
