Over the past ten years, Peaky Blinders has become a hugely popular crime drama. While it originally aired on BBC from 2013 to 2018, the show gained even more fans when it became available on Netflix in the 2020s. This led to a sixth and final season, and now a movie, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which continues the story (you can watch the trailer here).
ComicBook recently spoke with the actors from Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, including Cillian Murphy (known for Oppenheimer) and Tim Roth (The Incredible Hulk), who is new to the Peaky Blinders world with this movie.
We had to ask Cillian Murphy during our interview: after the Peaky Blinders finale seemed to wrap up Tommy Shelby’s story, what made him decide to come back for another season?
According to Cillian Murphy, the conclusion of Peaky Blinders wasn’t completely final. He appreciated the open-endedness of Season 6 and has always been open to continuing the story if there was more to tell. In fact, plans were underway for a seventh season when the pandemic disrupted those plans.
Why Cillian Murphy Returned For Peaky Blinders‘ Movie, Explained
According to Murphy, the creators of Peaky Blinders had planned a different ending and more story to tell, but weren’t able to film it. The show typically had one or two years between seasons, until Season 5 in 2019. Then, there was a three-year wait for Season 6 in 2022, which was followed by the Hollywood strikes of 2023. Many of the actors, including Cillian Murphy who won an Oscar for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023), moved on to new projects. While reuniting the original cast proved difficult, a final movie continuing Tommy Shelby’s story and connecting it to key events of 20th-century Europe and WWII was still achievable.
Murphy explained that making a film was always something they wanted to do, as the TV show already felt like a movie in how it told its stories. The main goal was to create a satisfying conclusion to the series and give the fans – who had spent 36 hours watching it – a special thank you for their support.
Though being presented as a farewell to fans of Peaky Blinders, the upcoming film The Immortal Man strongly suggests the possibility of continuing the story with new characters. The plot – featuring Tommy Shelby’s return to Birmingham during WWII and his resumption of criminal activity – creates an opportunity for someone like Barry Keoghan’s character, Duke Shelby, to lead a new generation of Peaky Blinders. We’ll find out more when the film debuts on Netflix on March 20th.
