Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Jim in the new film, 28 Years Later, more than two decades after 28 Days Later. He didn’t appear in either of the previous sequels, 28 Weeks Later or 28 Years Later, but will be back for the next installment. The last film shifted focus to a new character, Jimmy, and a group of villains inspired by Jimmy Savile, with Jack O’Connell leading the group – and their story will continue in the upcoming movie.
The upcoming film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will bring back the characters from the Jimmies gang, but it’s not intended to be the last movie in the series. Deadline reports that a third film is now in development, with Danny Boyle set to write the script and Cillian Murphy in discussions to reprise his role. While a third movie was always the goal for this rebooted franchise, Sony waited to assess the success of the first two films before officially confirming it. It seems studio executives are very happy with how the franchise is performing.
Cillian Murphy’s Return Is Great For 28 Years Later’s Future
Following the strong initial response to The Bone Temple – with some calling it one of the best horror films of the last ten years – news is emerging about a third film in the 28 Years Later series (currently without a title). The original 28 Years Later was a huge success, earning $151 million worldwide on a $60 million budget, and there’s a lot of hope the sequel will perform just as well. Confidence is high that the new film will even surpass the first one.
Cillian Murphy’s return will likely be a major draw for the third film, potentially making it the most successful one yet. His star power has grown significantly thanks to Oppenheimer, and he was the original protagonist of the series, so fans are eager to see him back. He’s currently scheduled to appear in The Bone Temple, though only briefly—likely a cameo to hint at what’s to come in the third film. While that’s exciting, having him reprise the lead role and conclude the story will be even more impactful.
In addition to Cillian Murphy, Danny Boyle is also likely to return to direct the final film, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed since Nia DaCosta is now directing. Boyle has expressed his desire to direct the third movie. If Murphy, Boyle, and Alex Garland all return, it would bring together the key creative forces behind the original 28 Days Later. Whether other actors, like Naomie Harris, will reprise their roles is still unknown, but it seems more likely now than before.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple will be released in theaters on 16th January, 2026.
