People are getting a glimpse of what might have been if Cillian Murphy had starred in this somewhat unremarkable Disney film. While it’s unlikely to have completely fixed the movie – critics described it as feeling cold and artificial – fans are definitely excited to see what Murphy could have brought to the role of Sark, especially with this artwork circulating online.
Concept designer Phil Saunders shared on Instagram that one of his earliest tasks for TRON: Legacy was a drawing of Cillian Murphy as the new Sark. The idea was to entice Murphy to return and play a younger version of Dillinger. Saunders jokingly wondered if the drawing might have actually been the reason Murphy didn’t end up in the film, since he wasn’t cast.
Even Cillian Murphy Probably Couldn’t Have Saved Tron: Legacy
Released in 2010, the film Tron: Legacy, starring Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, and Jeff Bridges, received mixed reviews. Critics gave it a score of only 51%, while audiences rated it slightly higher at 64%. Critic Sarah Vincent noted the film’s surprisingly weak portrayal of its villain compared to even the final season of Game of Thrones. While visually stunning with groundbreaking graphics for its time – and almost perfect aesthetically – the movie suffers from a weak story and underwhelming performances.
The movie received largely negative feedback, even from those who weren’t particularly critical. While many praised its visual effects, they found the story weak, the characters underdeveloped, and the pacing slow and uninspired. One viewer called it “boring,” while another said it felt like a safe, unoriginal take on Tron. A common theme in reviews is that the movie is visually stunning but lacks depth – all style and no substance. Even a strong performance from a talented actor like Murphy likely wouldn’t have been enough to overcome these flaws.
