Claire Danes experienced a breakdown during one of her pregnancies.
Oh my god, can you believe it? Claire Danes, Claire Danes! She told me—well, okay, she told a magazine, but it feels like she told me—that she completely lost it when she found out she was pregnant at 44! With Hugh Dancy, of course, her amazing husband. They had a little girl, Shay, born in 2023, and honestly, I’ve been obsessed with pictures ever since. It was such a surprise, and she said she ‘totally’ freaked out, which, same! I mean, Claire Danes having a baby? It’s everything!
I was a complete mess! I actually called my gynecologist, just sobbing, and had a total meltdown. That’s what I shared with Amy Poehler on her podcast, ‘Good Hang.’ It was a really raw, emotional moment for me.
It all just happened unexpectedly,” the 46-year-old explained. “I never thought something like that could even happen, especially at my age – I was 44 at the time.”
Claire, who is also a mom to Cyrus, 13, and Rowan, 7, with Hugh, said getting pregnant naturally in her 40s was “very rare.”
“Actually, Rowan was very hard-earned,” she explained. “I had to do two rounds of IVF.”
The actress from Homeland had previously shared how she felt – a mix of emotions – when she found out she was pregnant with Shay.
She recalled on the Smartless podcast, ‘I was so young when that happened, I didn’t think it was possible. I was really scared, but everything ended up being alright.’
Claire was completely surprised to find out she was pregnant at 44, and she was also taken aback by how she felt about it.
She admitted she felt unexpectedly embarrassed. She realized she’d gone further than she intended with a sexual encounter, and it felt strange. It was like she’d discovered a boundary she hadn’t fully understood before, and she was stepping outside of what felt safe or expected. She described the experience as exhilarating and a bit reckless.
As someone who’s seen a lot of families grow, I can tell you that finding the joy in each stage with your kids is key. Lately, I’ve been observing my friend Claire, who’s now a mom of three, really hit her stride. She’s truly embraced how wonderful it is to have kids at different ages – it’s like experiencing childhood all over again through their eyes!
She explained that her children are quite a bit apart in age – about five years each – and that having a teenager and a toddler at the same time is quite an experience.
