As someone who grew up with the old Atari, I’m so excited to see classic 2D platformers making a comeback after all these years! It’s been about 40 years since these games were originally released, and now they’re coming to all the major consoles. It’s awesome seeing so much love for retro games lately – I think a lot of us Gen-Xers are just feeling nostalgic for our childhoods. And now that we have a little spending money, publishers are bringing back everything from Atari LEGO sets to huge collections with over 150 games! Honestly, there’s just something special about those old games, but it’s tough to actually play them these days since the original consoles are so outdated.
Good news for fans of Montezuma’s Revenge! To mark its 40th anniversary, Eastasiasoft is releasing a new version of the classic game. Originally launched in 1984 by Utopia Technologies and published by Parker Brothers, Montezuma’s Revenge was available on several platforms, including the Atari 8-bit, Atari 2600, ColecoVision, Commodore 64, Apple II, and ZX Spectrum. The updated game will be released on December 10, 2025, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One & Series X|S, and Windows through the Microsoft Store.
Montezuma’s Revenge Is Getting a 21st-Century Update

Many Americans who’ve traveled to Mexico have experienced stomach troubles, but this game isn’t about that! You play as Panama Joe, navigating a complex adventure through an Aztec temple built by Emperor Montezuma II. The temple is full of monsters, traps, and dangerous surprises. You’ll earn jewels by defeating enemies, find keys to unlock doors, gather useful items, and solve puzzles along the way.
Despite being brilliantly programmed for its time, Robert Jaeger’s game is only now being re-released after forty years. Eastasiasoft isn’t just bringing the classic game to modern consoles – the original version is included and fully playable too. This new edition, Montezuma’s Revenge: The 40th Anniversary Edition, has been completely rebuilt with updated 2.5D graphics and sound, while keeping the original story, puzzles, and challenges intact. It’s a fresh experience that will appeal to longtime fans and newcomers alike, retaining the classic gameplay everyone remembers.
The 40th Anniversary Edition of Montezuma’s Revenge is a delightful gift for fans of classic games and a tribute to a standout title from the early 1980s. The original game was notoriously difficult – some players loved the challenge, while others found it incredibly frustrating! Either way, if you experienced this game back in the ‘80s, this updated version is made with players like you in mind. There was also a sequel, Montezuma’s Return, released in 1997 for Game Boy and Game Boy Color, but it’s not part of this edition – though future updates are always a possibility.
