In an unexpected turn of events, Amazon’s Prime Video has joined forces with musicians Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton to revamp a cherished old tale. The series will be overseen by Gina Matthews, offering a modern, music-focused adaptation of a well-known story that many are already acquainted with. This project isn’t the first attempt at reimagining the story, given its 86-year history since the original movie’s premiere, but it comes at a time when another contemporary take on the classic source material, “Wicked,” is thriving in cinemas.
On Tuesday, Deadline announced that Shania Twain and Blake Shelton are partnering with Amazon Prime Video to create a contemporary reimagining of “The Wizard of Oz” entitled “Dorothy”. This series will utilize the famous Yellow Brick Road as a symbolic representation of the hurdles and decisions faced by today’s young adults. In a statement, the showrunner, Matthews, expressed her lifelong affection for “The Wizard of Oz” books and the positive message she aims to convey through Dorothy. She stated, “I have cherished ‘The Wizard of Oz’ books since I was a child. The story serves as a reminder of the qualities we need during tough times, and Dorothy is a powerful symbol of resilience who demonstrates that with some compassion – along with determination – we can accomplish remarkable feats and uplift those around us. I am thrilled to share this empowering message with the world, especially now.

The Rings of Power,” “Invincible,” and “Gen V.” However, given the success of “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” it seems the streamer might be aiming to produce more young adult shows.
In an announcement to mark the news, Shelton disclosed that Matthews initially proposed the project to him and Metzger. Upon learning about the idea, he then approached his wife, Stefani, with it and secured her as a producer. “We’re thrilled about the potential this show offers, and I’m truly thankful that Gina shared the concept with me and Lee. I immediately felt it was something Gwen would resonate with. Her imagination and viewpoint align perfectly with this project.
At present, Dorothy makes an appearance when there’s renewed excitement for The Wizard of Oz, largely due to the incredible success of Wicked and its sequel, Wicked: For Good, hitting cinemas in November. Previously, numerous efforts have been made to reimagine this cherished classic, such as NBC’s Emerald City in 2017, but these attempts often falter by either veering too dark or deviating too much from the original storyline.
