A beloved first-person shooter from the late 1990s is getting a fresh update with a new remaster planned for release in late 2026. Several classic shooters from the genre’s early years have recently been remastered for today’s gaming systems, including titles like Hexen, Quake 2, and System Shock. This popular trend will continue with this long-awaited remaster.
Nightdive Studio announced this week that their remastered version of the 1998 first-person shooter Sin, called Sin Reloaded, will be released this year on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The original Sin put players in the role of John Blade, fighting through a futuristic city. While it wasn’t a massive hit when it first came out, the game gained a dedicated following and has since become a beloved cult classic.
The game puts you in the role of Colonel John R. Blade, a security consultant, in a dark, futuristic world. You’ll face off against the alluring but dangerous Doctor Elexis Sinclaire, the CEO of SinTEK Industries. When Elexis starts distributing a drug that changes people’s DNA, Blade must confront her and her army of genetically modified mutants, challenging his own sense of right and wrong. He’s dedicated his life to fighting crime, and now he’s determined to make Elexis answer for her actions.
Okay, so Nightdive is really stepping up the game with this new version of Sin. They’re calling it Reloaded, and it’s going to look amazing – they’re promising up to 4K resolution and a smooth 144fps! They’ve also updated the controls to feel more modern, and given the world a visual refresh. Best of all, it includes all the content from the Wages of Sin expansion, so it’s basically the definitive version of the game. I’m seriously excited to jump back in!
This Remaster Is a Long Time Coming
You might recognize the announcement of Sin Reloaded because it was originally revealed quite a while ago. Nightdive Studios first announced plans for this remastered version back in 2020, with a planned release in 2021. However, development shifted to a different team, which temporarily paused the project. After a long period of no news, Nightdive has returned and is now preparing to release the game in the coming months.
It’s still uncertain if Sin Reloaded will become successful enough to warrant further development, but it’s fantastic that this long-awaited project is finally being released after years of delays.
