It’s been revealed that the mastermind behind one of Cartoon Network‘s iconic classic shows has no immediate plans for a revival or reboot at this time. Despite recent efforts to find suitable streaming platforms for Cartoon Network classics due to significant changes in the industry, several popular shows are being revived or sequelized with their original creators involved. Shows like Regular Show, The Powerpuff Girls, Adventure Time, and others are in production for a comeback. However, there are still other fan favorites that fans eagerly anticipate.
Dexter’s Laboratory is an example of a show that was among Cartoon Network Studios’ pioneering original animated series. However, its creator Genndy Tartakovsky shared in a recent interview with Nexus Point News that he isn’t eager to revisit that world at the moment. In a playful tone, Tartakovsky suggested that he might only consider it when his career has come to an end and he can no longer “sell a project or do anything else.” Instead, he is focused on the various upcoming projects he currently has in the pipeline.
Dexter’s Laboratory Creator Has No Interest in Reboot

In my quieter moments, when my professional journey seems to be winding down and I’m unable to secure projects or generate income, I often find solace in a fantasy – Dexter’s Laboratory might make a comeback to revive my financial situation. However, it was Samurai Jack that organically unfolded because we never concluded the story initially. I didn’t view it as a revival, but rather an opportunity to complete the narrative. Regarding Dexter’s Laboratory, the challenges lie in the absence of Christine Cavanaugh, who gave life to the character with her distinctive voice. Her spirit was the heart of the show, and I struggle to replicate that. Unless we creatively reimagine it, finding a way to carry on the legacy she established.
Although the original creator may be hesitant about reviving Dexter’s Laboratory at this time, Tartakovsky has hinted at a possible comeback in the future if there is enough demand. However, he also cherishes the initial run of the show, as it marked the start of his career and holds a special place in his heart. While he works on other projects currently, there might be an opportunity for a return.
Will Dexter’s Laboratory Ever Return?

This sentiment aligns with how Genndy Tartakovsky felt about the possibility of bringing back Dexter’s Laboratory several years ago, as he stated in an interview with ComicBook: “Dexter… probably not.” He expressed discomfort at the thought of replacing the voice actress, Christine Cavanaugh, who he believed was the heart of Dexter’s Laboratory. Tartakovsky has already worked on numerous iterations of the show and questions why more are necessary, finding it odd to continue producing content in this instance.
Genndy Tartakovsky’s career is showing no signs of slowing or stopping anytime soon. Just recently, he released the R-rated adult animated comedy “Fixed” on Netflix. Moreover, Season 3 of “Primal” is currently being developed for Adult Swim, and there are numerous other projects in various stages of production that he’s working on. So, it looks like we might have to wait a while before seeing another installment of “Dexter’s Laboratory.
