One timeless Disney animated series originally aired during the Disney Afternoon programming block is now being revamped for a modern update, and the lead character’s creator hints at an updated version of the characters to fit the current era. The Disney Afternoon lineup remains iconic among Disney enthusiasts even decades later. Debuting in 1990, this time slot introduced numerous animation fans to shows that have since solidified their place as staples of Disney programming for years to come. Several have already been rebooted or revived since their initial airing, and there’s one more on the horizon.
The progress on the revival of “Darkwing Duck” has been somewhat elusive since it was first mentioned as being in development years ago. However, voice actor Jim Cummings recently shared an intriguing update about the upcoming project during an interview with thehijabibounder on TikTok. In addition to confirming that the main characters will be portrayed in older versions, he also compared it to Batman in a surprising manner.
Darkwing Duck Star Teases Older Characters for New Reboot

Darkwing Duck is making a comeback, which I’m really excited about! It holds a special place in my heart and I feel privileged that after 30 years, he’s returning. I don’t want to reveal too much, but his daughter Gosalyn has grown up and so has Darkwing himself. This is similar to what happened with Batman in one of the Batman series, where he aged significantly. Just like Batman, Darkwing will be back due to these events. Keep an eye out for more updates on this exciting development for the franchise.
As per Cummings, the upcoming version of Darkwing Duck is set in the future compared to the original series timeline and focuses on an aged Drake Mallard and his adopted daughter Gosalyn. It appears that this new version draws inspiration from series like The Dark Knight Returns, where an older Bruce Wayne returned to combat crime, or shows like Batman Beyond, which unfolded years into the future from the animated series. Regardless, it seems that this revival will incorporate a more somber mood for its mature characters in some capacity.
Is Darkwing Duck Getting a Reboot?

I’ve been keeping tabs on the revival of ‘Darkwing Duck’, but updates have been scarce since it was first announced. Initially, there wasn’t much solid information available. As far as we knew then, the project was in development for Disney+, but no specific writer had been assigned yet. It was mentioned that Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Alex AcAtee would be executive producers under Point Grey Pictures, with AcAtee taking charge of the whole project. Since that initial report, however, things have gone quiet on this front.
The latest news hints that a revival of Darkwing Duck is in progress, reaching a stage where they’ve apparently finalized the concept and character designs. However, there have also been rumors suggesting this reboot may have halted during production. As of now, the true status remains unclear. In the interim, you can enjoy the original Darkwing Duck series on Disney+.
