As a Switch gamer, I’ve been hoping for more big RPGs and MMOs for ages! A lot of newer games just seemed too demanding for the hardware, but with the Switch 2 coming out, that’s starting to change. But it’s not just new games – getting older, PC-focused titles onto the Switch has been tricky too. Luckily, we’re seeing more classic MMOs finally make the jump to consoles, and I was super excited to hear that Wizard 101 – which came to PlayStation and Xbox last year – is officially coming to the Switch!
Wizard101 has been a popular online game for 17 years, but it was originally only playable on computers. While it became available on Xbox and PlayStation in 2025, Nintendo Switch fans have been waiting their turn – until now! Wizard101 is launching on Nintendo Switch on January 13th. However, the version for Switch will have some differences compared to the Xbox and PlayStation versions.
Free-to-Start MMORPG Wizard 101 Will Have a Pricetag from Day 1 on Switch

Wizard101 is still enjoyed today because it combines magical role-playing with the strategy of deckbuilding card games. Players enter The Spiral, a constantly expanding world filled with powerful magic. You play as a student at Ravenwood School of Magical Arts, learning and improving your skills through turn-based card battles. As you progress, you’ll work to save the world with other wizards. Beyond the main quest, there are plenty of relaxing activities like raising pets, making items, gardening, and fishing, just like in other online games.
Similar to other popular online games, Wizard101 lets you play for free initially. Since 2019, players can download the game and complete the first world without paying. This free portion takes about 3-4 hours to finish, depending on how you play. It’s more like a long trial than a truly free game. However, this free access to the first world was available on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. When the game launched on Nintendo Switch, the developers decided to try a slightly different method.
Players on other gaming systems can usually try the first part of the game for free. To continue, they can either pay a monthly fee for new stories and areas, or buy an Arc Access Pass for specific story bundles. The monthly subscription costs $10 and unlocks all new content as it’s released. The Nintendo Switch version of Wizard101 will work similarly, but won’t offer the initial free trial.

When Wizard101 launches on the Nintendo Switch on January 13th, it will cost $19.99 to download. This price includes the entire first story arc, which currently costs $20 as an add-on for the Xbox and PlayStation versions. So, you’re getting roughly the same amount of content for the same price on all consoles. However, the Switch version won’t be free to start like other versions; you’ll need to purchase it to begin playing the first story arc, meaning you won’t be able to try it out before you buy.
Besides a small difference, Wizard 101 on Switch will be almost identical to the game on other platforms. Switch players will join the same servers as those on PlayStation and Xbox, allowing them to experience the magical world of Wizard 101 with other console gamers.
The popular online game Wizard101 is now available on Nintendo Switch as of January 13th. You can also download and play it for free on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
