A beloved game from the original PlayStation, first released in 1998, is getting a fresh start in 2026. The last year saw a surge in updated versions of classic PS1 games, with titles like Suikoden, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, Final Fantasy Tactics, and several Tomb Raider games receiving upgrades for modern systems. Now, this trend continues with a surprising new release to start the new year.
The remastered version of the classic game Tomba! Special Edition is now available on Nintendo Switch 2. Originally released in 2024 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC, Tomba! was a hit with fans, leading to a remastered version of its sequel, Tomba! 2. Publisher Limited Run Games surprised everyone by suddenly launching Tomba! Special Edition on the new Switch 2 console. You can download it now from the Nintendo eShop for $19.99.
Limited Run Games says the Switch 2 version of Tomba! Special Edition will have better graphics and run more smoothly thanks to improved resolution, performance, and assets. It also includes a ‘Downsampled Display’ mode for a clearer picture. While the gameplay is identical on both Switch consoles, the Switch 2 is the preferred way to experience the game if you have a choice.
Unfortunately, there’s a significant drawback to this new Switch 2 version of Tomba! Special Edition. Players who already bought the game on the original Switch won’t be able to upgrade for free. They’ll have to buy the Switch 2 version as a separate purchase.
As we’ve noted, Tomba! Special Edition isn’t the only game in the series to receive a remaster. Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return Special Edition was released just last month and is also available on Switch/Switch 2, as well as PlayStation 5 and PC. Similar to the first remaster, buying Tomba! 2 for a Nintendo console means you’ll need to make sure you get the version for the correct console, as there won’t be an upgrade path for the Switch 2.
