Real-time strategy games used to be incredibly popular. Games like Warcraft III, Heroes of Might & Magic III, and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War are some of my all-time favorites and represent the best the genre has to offer. While many other great RTS games exist, most of these classic franchises aren’t as well-known today. The gaming world has moved on to focus on different types of games, and fans of RTS are hoping to see the genre make a strong comeback.
The moment fans have been waiting for appears to be here. While Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era is trying to revive a classic strategy series, real-time strategy (RTS) players have something to anticipate as well. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 is expected to revitalize the Dawn of War series, and it looks set to be the largest installment yet. If the developers at King Art succeed, Dawn of War 4 could bring back one of the most popular RTS franchises.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Is So Back

As soon as gameplay videos were released, it was clear that Dawn of War 4 feels like a true follow-up to the original Dawn of War – the game many fans consider the best in the series. The new installment captures the intense, impactful combat and clear battlefield view that made the first game so popular, all with updated graphics and effects. Units move realistically, weapons have a powerful feel, and the environments look like detailed, war-torn scenes. The developers, King Art – known for Iron Harvest – seem to be successfully applying their expertise to this beloved franchise.
This game isn’t trying to be a copy of previous titles like Dawn of War 2 or Dawn of War 3. It’s a return to classic real-time strategy gameplay, focusing on building bases, controlling territory, and epic battles. Players who enjoyed commanding large armies of Space Marines and vehicles will find a familiar experience. While it leans into nostalgia, the game also looks and feels modern, with impressive visuals, strategic depth, and updated animations that honor the original while still feeling new.
After playing the last couple of Dawn of War games, this new one feels like a really welcome change. It’s not like they’re ditching new ideas, but it’s a good reminder that Dawn of War is best when it’s easy to pick up strategically, but still delivers that brutal, over-the-top action that makes Warhammer 40K so awesome. If the developers can keep this balance right, this could be more than just a return to form – it could be one of the best RTS games we’ve seen in years!
Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 4 Features the First Playable Primarch

A major surprise for fans of the upcoming Dawn of War 4 is the inclusion of Lion El’Jonson, the Primarch of the Dark Angels. The latest trailer hinted at the return of this legendary warrior, who was previously believed to be deceased. While not officially confirmed, the trailer strongly suggests players might finally be able to control a Primarch in the game. If true, this would be a huge moment for Warhammer gaming, as Primarchs are typically featured only in the tabletop game, cutscenes, or pre-determined battles.
Adding Lion El’Jonson as a playable character would fundamentally change large-scale battles in a real-time strategy game. Primarchs aren’t simply powerful units; they represent the core identity of their entire army. Think of a devastating tactical weapon combined with the strategic mind of a master general. A Primarch could become the central focus of a faction’s gameplay, influencing battles, dictating army builds, and completely reimagining how hero units function in RTS games. It’s easy to picture the impressive sight of a Primarch breaking through enemy formations, absorbing massive damage that would destroy entire units, and creating sudden shifts in the battle that force players to react quickly.
Adding the Dark Angels to the game is a huge deal for the story. Their complicated past, internal struggles, and secretive ways open up tons of possibilities for compelling narratives, particularly when paired with the Blood Ravens. The fact that Lion El’Jonson is involved highlights just how important the planet Kronus is. With a legendary Warhammer 40,000 author, John French, helping to write the story, this campaign has the potential to be one of the most memorable and grand in the series. It also makes me excited to see how the other factions will react to and compete with a Space Marine Primarch being present.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 May Be the Most Expansive Yet

Space Marines are a staple of Warhammer 40,000 games, but it’s significant to see two chapters – the Blood Ravens and the Dark Angels – actively featured in the game’s story, not just as options for customizing armies. The Blood Ravens, in particular, hold a special place for many players, thanks to their intriguing history, compelling characters, and prominent role in past games. Their return suggests the developers at King Art understand what longtime fans are looking for in a new Dawn of War sequel. Including the Dark Angels demonstrates that the studio also respects the current lore and ongoing storyline.
I’m really excited about the addition of the Adeptus Mechanicus! While I wish the Eldar were included as playable characters, the Adeptus are my second favorite faction and haven’t been featured enough in Warhammer 40K games. The inclusion of Orks and Necrons is also great, as they offer a variety of gameplay styles that most fans will enjoy. I’m especially looking forward to seeing how the developers support the game long-term and hopefully add more factions from Dawn of War with future expansions.
The game isn’t just fun to play; it also looks fantastic – it’s the most visually impressive project the studio has ever undertaken. The developers have put a lot of effort into details like the environments, unique animations for each side, and highly detailed units, really pushing the boundaries of what real-time strategy games can look like. The environments are massive, there’s a wide range of units, and the focus on huge battles promises a game that feels both epic and tactically engaging. Plus, each playable faction will have its own story campaign, offering a diverse and compelling narrative experience.
Strategy games are becoming popular again, with both classic base-building titles and large-scale science fiction adventures making a comeback. Dawn of War 4 is perfectly timed to join them. It successfully blends familiar gameplay with new ideas, evokes a sense of nostalgia while still being innovative, and fully embraces the dark and dramatic atmosphere that makes the Warhammer 40K universe so popular with gamers.
