Following his earlier comments calling Clockwork Revolution the most complex game he’s ever been involved with, inXile Entertainment head Brian Fargo now states it’s the studio’s most ambitious project – and by a significant margin, potentially ten times more so than anything they’ve done before.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, the developer explained their aim was to recreate the dynamic gameplay of their older, top-down games, but in a first-person perspective. While players have pointed out resemblances to games like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (sadly, the remake was cancelled) and Dishonored, the team’s original vision was simply to create a steampunk-themed role-playing game.
It’s understandable why people are comparing our game to others. When you work with time-based gameplay, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time naturally comes to mind. Plus, we brought on a talented artist who previously worked on Dishonored, so that game’s style definitely had an impact. We’re clearly hitting on some familiar notes, which is flattering because those are all great games! But the core idea behind Clockwork Revolution was actually pretty straightforward: we simply wanted to create a steampunk RPG.
It’s great to see inXile and Fargo trying their hand at a similar style of game, especially since several developers from Interplay also worked on Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. The studio clearly cares about this type of role-playing game – they feel it’s been underrepresented – and they’ve even brought on key people from the beloved classic Arcanum, including game director Chad Moore and principal designer Jason Anderson, to help bring their vision to life.
According to Fargo, steampunk is central to the game’s identity. While they’re happy if players feel echoes of games like Dishonored or Prince of Persia, their goal with Clockwork Revolution is to create a unique take on time travel and how the world responds to player choices.
While there’s no official release date yet, Clockwork Revolution is rumored to be coming to Xbox Series X/S and PC later this year. The game takes place in the intricate clockwork city of Avalon, where Lady Ironwood uses time travel to maintain the power of the elite. You play as Morgan Vanette and your choices will directly impact the present, with consequences that can be positive, negative, or somewhere in between.
