Call of Duty: Warzone is about to enter its sixth year after launching in early 2020. The developers at Treyarch are planning to revisit the game’s roots by bringing back Blackout, the first battle royale mode that appeared in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
This mode wasn’t a separate game like Warzone; it was included with the yearly Call of Duty release and played quite differently than today’s battle royale games. Now that Treyarch is reviving it, the big question is whether players will enjoy it and if they’ll make any significant updates.
Here is what we know.
CoD Warzone Blackout release window
Call of Duty: Warzone is planned to receive a large-scale, Blackout-inspired game mode in Spring 2026. This update is expected to arrive with Season 3, likely around March or April.
Just to clarify, when we say “Blackout,” we’re talking about the way the game is played, not a return to the original Blackout map. That map won’t be coming back. This new experience will happen on Avalon, the map already featured in the standard battle royale mode and the co-op campaign’s final stages in Black Ops 7.
This update will change how the game plays, not just add a new place to play it.
What made Blackout different?
Blackout offered a different take on the battle royale genre compared to Warzone. It emphasized scavenging for gear and supplies more than Warzone does now, which has a lot more options for customizing your loadout. Players started with just a basic pistol and had to find everything else – attachments, weapons, equipment, and perks – while exploring the map.
This made the game significantly harder than Warzone because you had to manage a lot more gear and were always looking for improvements. Unlike Warzone, you couldn’t just choose a set of weapons and equipment at the start and use it for the entire match.
The game also made it difficult to stay in one place for long. Instead of relying on pre-selected gear, your strength came from the items you discovered while exploring.
Blackout will probably be a game mode where you start with only a pistol. The items you find on the ground will be more important, with better attachments, perks, and strong weapons appearing in the busiest parts of the map.
We will keep this article updated with more details as and when it gets revealed.
