Code Vein 2’s Advanced Access Hit by “Mixed” Steam Reviews, Players Criticise Poor Performance

Although Code Vein 2 officially launches on January 30th, players who purchased the Deluxe or Ultimate editions were given early access. Unfortunately, initial reactions haven’t been great, and the game currently has a “Mixed” rating on Steam.

The game has received mixed reviews. Many players appreciate the detailed character customization, gameplay improvements over the original Code Vein, and enhanced graphics. However, some critics have pointed out that the game isn’t running as smoothly as it should due to optimization issues.

One player who spent about two hours with the game reported significant performance issues. Despite having a good computer, they experienced problems like objects appearing suddenly, jarring transitions in cutscenes, and a consistently low frame rate in multiple areas. They stated that the game simply doesn’t run smoothly.

Although Bandai Namco hasn’t officially commented, some players and reviewers are pointing to the game’s use of Unreal Engine 5 as the cause of its performance issues. One player commented, “It seems Unreal Engine 5 is causing problems again. I shouldn’t have to cap the frame rate at 30 FPS just to be able to play the game smoothly.”

Bandai Namco’s Code Vein 2 has already attracted a large number of players, even during its early access period. Currently, over 8,200 people are playing the game on Steam, with a peak of 9,200 concurrent players recorded so far. If there aren’t significant technical problems, player numbers are expected to increase in the coming days.

Just before the release of Code Vein 2, Bandai Namco launched a demo focusing on character creation. This demo lets players experiment with a vast number of customization options – reportedly thousands of different styles – to design their characters. Players can also explore the Magmell’s Institute within the demo and interact with its characters. A great feature for those who enjoy the character creator is the ability to transfer up to 64 created characters to the full game when it launches.

The upcoming game, Code Vein 2, will feature a new set of characters, both heroic and villainous. This month, a trailer was released introducing Zenon Gryfgote, and it really stood out. Instead of a typical character reveal, the trailer included a complete song where Zenon explains his drive to build a better future, even as the world falls into darkness and happiness fades.

Zenon’s design is a fun take on the classic “dark knight” found in many fantasy games. His elaborate armor and the expressive digital face on his helmet make him a character players will definitely notice and likely see as a threat.

A sequel to Code Vein is being released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Here’s a look at what makes it different from the original Code Vein.
