Girls were always on Cody Simpson‘s mind when he was a teenager.
Okay, so as someone who follows celebrity lifestyles, it’s fascinating to look back at how quickly this singer – you probably know him as the artist behind “All Day” – rose to fame. He moved to LA when he was just 14, and suddenly found himself dating some major stars. We’re talking Kylie Jenner, Gigi Hadid, and even Miley Cyrus! Now, years later, he’s been opening up about what those high-profile relationships were really like, and it’s giving us a peek behind the curtain of fame.
Cody shared that he first started dating Kylie Jenner in 2011. They met at the premiere of Twilight: Eclipse, where Kylie and her sister, Kendall Jenner, were doing red carpet interviews with the celebrities.
He said on the March 10th episode of the We Need to Talk podcast that he believes he got her number and they started chatting. They went on a few dates – like going to the movies – and were together for about a year.
Now 29, and having been with swimmer Emma McKeon since 2022, he found it reassuring to bond with someone else who understood the pressures of being in the public eye so early in life.
He felt they connected because of the unusual experiences they shared. It was good to have someone to relate to at that time in their lives.
Growing up, I didn’t go to a traditional school, and it wasn’t co-ed. I was homeschooled, which meant my social life was pretty limited. I mostly met people at events like the Twilight premiere or my own concerts. It was hard to just be a normal kid and experience dating and things like kissing because there weren’t many opportunities for that.
After breaking up with Kylie—who began dating Timothée Chalamet in 2023—Cody started dating Gigi in 2013.
She was definitely my first love. We had an on-again, off-again relationship that lasted around two years.

The singer of “La Da Dee” got the model’s number through a friend and then pretended to be filming a music video as a way to get them to meet.
Looking back, it feels silly, but I actually just called her out of the blue,” he said. “I told her, ‘Hi, it’s Cody, I’m a musician, and I’m working on a music video. I was wondering if you’d be interested in being in it.’ The thing is, there wasn’t a video, and there weren’t even any plans to make one. All the videos had already been filmed.
I think I completely made up an idea and presented it to her, and she just said, ‘Sure.’ That really helped us start talking. After that, I began texting her, explaining that the video project probably wasn’t going to work out, but asking if she’d like to hang out and grab a bite to eat sometime.

Gigi and Bradley Cooper started spending time together, and a few weeks later, she joined him on his Paradise tour. This came after Gigi’s previous relationship with Zayn Malik.
He said that people cross paths at the right time for a reason. They met when they were meant to, and both grew from the experience.
Four years after that, Miley Cyrus captured his heart. He revealed they spent the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic together; he’d first met her when he was 18.
We used to spend a lot of time together, going out and just hanging around. We became close because we were both trying to break away from the pressures of being teen pop stars. She’s been very open about rebelling against that image over the years, and she’s gone through some tough times. I think when I started to question things myself, she came into my life and helped me deal with it.

He and Miley, who is now engaged to Maxx Morando, drifted apart for a while when he went through a more free-spirited phase, but they became friends again after a few years. They dated from 2019 to 2020.
He explained that they were clearly meant to be together then, as they were both in a good headspace and at a different point in their lives than when they were just friends. They were both trying to understand what they’d experienced, and he said he’ll always appreciate that time they shared.
Cody’s not alone in remaining friendly with his exes – many celebrities maintain positive relationships with those they used to date. Here’s a look at other stars who are on good terms with their former partners.

There’s absolutely no chance they’re getting back together. However, with all the recent interactions – birthday celebrations, affectionate hugs, and even playfully acting out a romantic scene during the Fast Times at Ridgemont High virtual reading – it feels like they’re just teasing everyone who hoped they’d reconcile.

Sarah proved she’s confident and playful when she appeared on her ex-husband Jimmy’s talk show. She was there to promote her new series, I Love You, America, and playfully teased him about his wife, Molly Kimmel, describing her as “cute,” “bright,” and “funny.” Joking about the difference between them, Sarah quipped, “It’s not fair! She gets the updated, more aware Jimmy. I just had the Jimmy from The Man Show.”

Honestly, some people seemed more upset about this relationship ending than the people involved! When Anna—who is now married to Michael Barrett—found out Chris Pratt was marrying Katherine Schwarzenegger in 2019, she volunteered to perform the ceremony. She even sent a gift when their daughter, Lyla, was born in August 2020. A source reported that Anna was happy for her son, Jack, to have a little sister and was very supportive of the new family.

It easily could have fallen apart after their difficult breakup. But four years later, the HGTV stars are thriving – both as parents to Taylor and Brayden, and by successfully renovating homes for others.

Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, who have a daughter, actress Zoe Kravitz, describe their relationship as a close, familial bond – what Lenny called being “best friends” in a 2013 interview with Oprah Winfrey. Despite their divorce, they remain a supportive family, with Lisa later marrying Jason Momoa before their separation in 2020. Lenny sees it as a positive example of how people can maintain loving relationships even after romantic ties end, calling it “beautiful” and showing “what can be done.”

Since the Dancing With the Stars co-host and retired hockey player separated in 2020, they’ve consistently shown everyone they remain friendly.
When Brooks announced he was getting engaged to Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir in December 2024, Julianne shared her excitement online. She posted on Instagram, wishing them a lifetime of happiness, love, laughter, and fun adventures as they start this new chapter together.
Several months later, the dancer, her ex-husband, and his pregnant fiancée all spent the day together at the lake. She shared a photo of the four of them with a caption calling them “three cuties” and describing it as a special day.

After splitting up in 2015, the parents of Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel have successfully co-parented, managing to take family vacations together, celebrate holidays as a unit, and publicly support each other. In a 2016 interview with TopMob News, Ben praised his former partner as “an amazing mother.”

Okay, so you might remember Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder dated for about three years, but they split back in 2013. It’s actually really mature of them – they’ve stayed good friends ever since! Then, in 2014, Ian started dating Nikki Reed, and things moved pretty quickly – they were married later that same year. As you can imagine, Nina and Nikki became friends too. It’s all about keeping things positive and supportive, even after a relationship ends – that’s my take on it!

The couple ended their five-year relationship in July 2016. The singer later shared on Howard Stern’s radio show in October that she remained very close to her ex, describing him as a long-time lover and friend.
“We love each other,” she said. “That’s it.”

Even years after The Office ended in 2013, the chemistry between its stars remained apparent, and Mindy Kaling understands why fans still root for them as a couple. In a 2019 interview with Good Housekeeping, she explained that while she chose him to be a godfather to her children, their connection goes deeper than friendship. She said that B.J. Novak feels more like family to her now.

After their divorce was finalized in 2011, the former couple easily continued to raise their son, Bronx. The Fall Out Boy singer has publicly praised his ex-wife, calling her a fantastic mother.

I’ve been following this closely, and it sounds like they’ve really moved on! He’s been saying they’re just friends now, that they’ve got a really good, friendly relationship even after everything. It’s good to hear they’re on such good terms!

Jennifer and her Dexter co-star first connected on the set of the show in 2006, and their relationship became romantic two years later. Even after their divorce in 2011, Jennifer later shared that they maintained a loving and respectful relationship.

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore are famously friendly exes, and their commitment to co-parenting daughters Rumer, Tallulah, and Scout is clear. It’s no surprise they decided to spend the COVID-19 lockdown together as a family in Idaho—maybe even having a dance party or two!

Even four years after their 2014 divorce, Jennifer Lopez continued to praise her ex-husband, the father of her twins, Max and Emme. In a 2018 interview on Sunday Today, she explained that Marc Anthony had been a significant source of confidence during their marriage. He recognized her insecurities and constantly encouraged her, telling her she was a talented singer and urging her not to listen to anyone who said otherwise. Lopez expressed deep respect for him, considering him one of the greatest singers ever.

Despite facing personal challenges, the actress remains supportive of her ex-husband and former Scream colleague. Eight years after their 2010 divorce, she described it as a relatively amicable split while appearing on Running Wild With Bear Grylls. She added that they successfully co-parent their daughter, Coco.

Although their real-life relationship ended in 2007, they still had great chemistry on screen in the 2011 film Bad Teacher.

Although their 2013 breakup was difficult at first, the actors have reached a point where they can vacation together as a group. The actor shared with LaPalme Magazine that he gets along well with his ex-wife’s husband, describing him as a “great guy.” He mentioned a 2017 trip to Cancun where they were joined by Garth, Dave Abrams, Peter’s fiancée Lily Anne Harrison, and their three daughters, Luca, Lola, and Fiona. He also spoke about his relationship with Jennie, explaining, “People enter your life for a reason, and relationships evolve. Just because you’re not together doesn’t mean you can’t still care for each other.”

Even though they unexpectedly separated in September 2012, the couple publicly acted as if they were still together for the sake of their children. In a 2014 interview with Howard Stern, she explained that she and Will remained very close friends and were successfully co-parenting. She didn’t view their ten-year marriage as a failure, believing that all relationships face challenges.

The Grammy-winning artist and her ex-husband, who officially divorced in January 2024, have maintained a friendly relationship while raising their son, Hayes. They even live just five minutes apart, making it easy to share parenting responsibilities.
“Our stops are really easy,” Maren told The Zoe Report in May 2025, “and we’ll have family dinners.”
