The origins of Cold Storage
The editor is currently trying to get healthy, despite admitting he doesn’t know much about it – he even thought hepatitis B was a vitamin! He’s convinced mushrooms are completely useless, but the fungus in the movie Cold Storage has a much more sinister goal: destroying humanity. This fungus arrived on Earth aboard pieces of the 1979 Skylab space station, which crashed around the world and was quickly collected by NASA. However, the movie’s story, based on David Koepp’s book, reveals a different origin: an oxygen tank found in the Australian outback, seemingly inactive for years, but ultimately responsible for wiping out an entire town.
So what’s in Cold Storage?
When a strange outbreak occurs, microbiologist Dr. Martins (Sosie Bacon) and NASA expert Robert Quinn (Liam Neeson), along with his colleague Trini Romano (Lesley Manville), arrive to investigate. They quickly discover the protective suits they have aren’t effective – likely due to faulty equipment – and collect a sample. This initial finding provides a terrifying preview of how dangerous the fungus is to humans and foreshadows the disaster to come.
It’s alive!!!!!
The container ended up at a defense facility that later closed down, becoming about as secure as any ordinary social gathering. Deep underground, a fungus lay dormant and forgotten. Meanwhile, an employee nicknamed “Teacake” – a name explained later, though it’s reminiscent of a playful tradition from American boarding schools – worked the night shift with a more street-smart colleague, Naomi. They had both turned down their manager’s scheme to steal HDTVs from the facility.
Funky fungus?
This fungus has mysteriously sprung to life, infecting anyone who gets close and spreading quickly across surfaces like floors, walls, and vents. When it infects a living creature, the results are disturbingly gruesome, thanks to the special effects team who had complete creative freedom. Both humans and animals are affected – including a darkly humorous, suicidal cat that hints at the tone of the story. As Naomi and Teacake try to escape the fungus, Neeson and Manville return to action, transforming deer, bikers, and even ex-boyfriends into horrifyingly made-up creatures.
The most unexpected of casts ….
Featuring a surprising cast including Vanessa Redgrave alongside Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville, Cold Storage is a deliberately low-budget, but cleverly plotted, horror film. It’s a fun, gory watch perfect for a Saturday night, and might make you think twice about ordering mushroom risotto!
