While the Riddler was the primary antagonist in The Batman, several other familiar villains from Batman’s history also had important parts to play. The Penguin, in particular, stood out thanks to a striking performance by Colin Farrell. Although he didn’t appear on screen for very long in The Batman, his role helped pave the way for the popular HBO Max series The Penguin, which offered a detailed look at Oz Cobb’s efforts to gain power within Gotham’s criminal world. Given that this series of films is called The Batman Epic Crime Saga, many expected a crime boss like the Penguin to have an even larger role in The Batman Part II. However, reports suggest that won’t be happening.
I was reading The Hollywood Reporter recently, and they had a quick chat with Colin Farrell about him coming back for The Batman Part II. He wasn’t giving much away, understandably, but he did drop a little surprise about his part. He said, “I’ve got an even smaller role in this one. But I’m okay with that.” Apparently, he’s read the whole script and thinks it’s fantastic. He described it as “deeper, scarier, the stakes are bigger,” and he’s genuinely excited for us to see it. It sounds like they’re really raising the game with this sequel, and even with a smaller role, he seems thrilled to be involved!
The Batman Part II Could Have Minimal Connections to The Penguin

The Penguin series was originally planned as a way to connect Matt Reeves’ first two Batman movies, setting up the story for The Batman Part II. The last scene of the show suggested a future battle between Batman and the Penguin, with the Bat Signal appearing as Oz celebrated his rise to power-a sign of trouble to come. However, according to Colin Farrell, viewers might have to be patient. It seems the character development in The Penguin wasn’t intended to create a major role for Oz in the movie sequel.
Fans might be let down to learn this, especially considering the widespread acclaim Colin Farrell has received for playing the Penguin. A lot of people were hoping to see his character play a bigger role in a movie. However, director Matt Reeves has suggested that The Batman Part II might not focus on the Penguin as much as some fans anticipated. Cristin Milioti won’t be returning as Sofia Gigante in the film; Reeves explained that the script for The Batman Part II was already well underway when The Penguin series really gained traction. So, even though The Penguin ended with a hint about a possible future storyline for Sofia, that plotline will be put on hold for now.
It was a smart decision to keep The Batman Part II and The Penguin separate during development, as both were being worked on at the same time. Stories often change while being written, and this allowed each creative team to focus on their own vision without worrying about the other. Plus, if the show hadn’t been successful, continuing those storylines in the movie could have been harmful. Had the production schedules been different, Reeves may have included more Penguin-related content in The Batman 2, taking advantage of the positive fan reaction. However, The Penguin remains an important part of the overall Batman crime story, offering a deeper look into the character than the films can. He’s a complex character, and what viewers learn in the show will add to their understanding of him when he appears in the movie. He’s far from a simple villain.
Reeves has suggested he’d like to further develop Sofia’s character, and it’s possible she and Oz could be important in his third Batman film. This could provide a satisfying conclusion to the crime story, with Batman stuck in the middle of a conflict between Oz and Sofia. For now, it will be interesting to see how Reeves utilizes Penguin’s limited screen time in The Batman Part II. The film’s primary antagonist, who is rumored to be someone from Bruce Wayne’s history, might team up with Oz to create problems for Batman, giving Penguin a small but significant role before he reappears in either The Penguin Season 2 or The Batman Part III.
