Colin Farrell is opening up about the shelved Sgt. Rock movie.
Luca Guadagnino was initially chosen to direct a movie about the DC character Sgt. Rock for Warner Bros. and DC Studios. The film was planned to be part of the new DC Universe being created by James Gunn and Peter Safran, and Daniel Craig was rumored to be starring. However, reports later surfaced that Craig wasn’t involved, and Colin Farrell was being considered for the main role instead.
Work on the project stopped earlier this year. While Gunn mentioned in June that they were still trying to make the movie, there’s been very little news about it since, so it’s uncertain if it will actually happen. In July, TheWrap reported that director Guadagnino was no longer working on the film.
What did Colin Farrell say about the Sgt. Rock movie?
In a conversation with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Chris Pratt mentioned the script for ‘Sgt. Rock’ is excellent and expressed curiosity about the project’s current status.
Honestly, I was completely in the dark about this project, but it sounds like it was originally intended as a collaboration with Luca. We’d had a few conversations, really positive ones, but I lost track of where things stood. He seemed confident it should be finished, and from what he told me, it really was something special – full of genuinely great material. He clearly believed in it, and now I’m curious to see it come to life.
There’s currently no release date for the Sgt. Rock movie, and it doesn’t seem to be a high priority for DC Studios right now. The DC Universe projects planned for 2026 are Lanterns, Supergirl, and Clayface.
Colin Farrell will return as Oz Cobb, also known as The Penguin, in the sequel to The Batman, currently scheduled for release in October 2027. This film exists separately from the main DC Universe and is part of Matt Reeves’ own Batman crime story arc.
