Matt Reeves’ crime series, The Penguin, has been a huge success, building on his Batman films. The show, which follows Oz Cobb’s climb through Gotham’s criminal world, received widespread praise and earned 24 Emmy nominations, with Cristin Milioti winning an award for her performance. Originally planned as a short series to connect the first two Batman movies, its popularity has led to speculation about a second season. The creators are interested in continuing the story if they can find the right direction, and now Colin Farrell has shared his thoughts on the possibility.
While promoting his new film, The Ballad of a Small Player, Colin Farrell discussed the potential for a second season of The Penguin. He admitted he tends to be pessimistic, and while he doesn’t think a Season 2 is a sure thing, he wouldn’t rule it out entirely. He explained that the show’s creators are exploring storylines that could warrant another eight episodes, building on the world established by Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The events at the end of The Batman – specifically the death and chaos in Gotham – created a power vacuum that allowed his character, Oz, to rise. The Batman Part II will likely pick up the story a few weeks after The Penguin concludes.
Does The Penguin Season 2 Need to Happen After The Batman Part II?

Despite Colin Farrell currently doubting a second season of The Penguin, many fans are hoping he’s mistaken. He recently revealed that Penguin will have a smaller role in The Batman Part II compared to the first film. This came as a surprise to some, who expected the series to lead to a larger part for the character in the sequel. While Penguin was a notable villain in the first Batman movie, he only appeared in a few scenes, and it seems his role in the next film will be similar – he won’t be the central focus, at least for now.
Matt Reeves has also confirmed that Allison Janney won’t be back as Sofia Gigante in The Batman Part II. He explained this was simply due to the timing of production. Both The Penguin series and The Batman Part II were being written simultaneously. By the time The Penguin aired and Sofia became a popular character, the story for the sequel was already well underway. While this makes logical sense, many fans are still disappointed, as they were hoping to see Sofia return. The ending of The Penguin hinted at a future encounter between Sofia and Selina Kyle, leaving some eager for that storyline to continue.
Because The Penguin had a small role in The Batman Part II, many fans now believe a second season of The Penguin TV show is essential. Director Matt Reeves has stated his Batman films will focus mainly on Bruce Wayne, leaving limited space to fully develop other characters. The success of The Penguin series came from its ability to thoroughly explore a supporting villain from the first film, turning a standout character into a complex and well-developed one. Seeing Cobblepot in The Batman Part II will likely remind viewers of the detailed story told in the TV show, highlighting the value of expanding on characters through separate series.
Robert Pattinson is still planning another Batman film, which means we might see Oz and Sofia’s characters return. However, that movie is a long way off, and fans would likely be disappointed if they had to wait years for more of their story. Continuing Sofia’s and Oz’s arcs with a second season of The Penguin would be a good way to keep their characters relevant and could even build towards the conclusion of the Batman trilogy. The Penguin Season 1 was a hit, creating a compelling, Sopranoslike story, so it would be a shame to put Sofia’s character on hold for so long. Colin Farrell is right to say the show should only continue if there’s a good story to tell. The end of The Batman provided a perfect starting point for The Penguin*, so hopefully, the next season can pick up on a similar loose end.
