Halloween is a popular holiday known for fun costumes, scary movie nights, and spooky decorations. Many TV shows get in on the fun too, either with Halloween-themed episodes featuring costumes or by fully embracing the spooky spirit with horror references. While shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Modern Family are known for their Halloween episodes, one sitcom stands out as having created a truly exceptional one.
Even after fifteen years, many fans still consider the Community episode “Epidemiology” to be the best Halloween episode in sitcom history. Community was famous for its ambitious parodies and creative concepts, playfully imitating genres like action movies, documentaries, and police dramas. It’s no surprise they approached Halloween with the same energy, and “Epidemiology” truly stands out as a hilarious and clever parody. The episode remains incredibly popular with viewers, and despite numerous attempts by other shows, it continues to be unmatched as the gold standard for Halloween sitcoms.
“Epidemiology” Fully Embraces the Horror Genre
Lots of sitcoms have done Halloween episodes, but few really leaned into the scary side of the holiday. Usually, these episodes just show the characters in costumes, maybe going to or throwing a party. However, Community went further, starting its Halloween episode like many others – with the characters at a costume party – but then took things in a new direction.
The study group is all together at a costume party in the Greendale Community College library. Jeff’s dressed as David Beckham, Britta’s a T. rex, Pierce is Captain Kirk from Star Trek, Annie is Red Riding Hood, and Troy and Abed have a matching Alien-inspired costume. No one can figure out Shirley’s costume – she’s Glinda the Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz. What begins as a typical Halloween episode quickly becomes concerning when Pierce starts feeling sick after eating food purchased by the Dean.
Things quickly go downhill when Pierce gets bitten by Star-Burns, leading to a full-scale zombie outbreak. The episode’s fast shift from a normal Halloween party to a scary horror scene is brilliantly done, and feels right at home for a show like Community. As more students become zombies, the study group and Chang lock themselves inside their study room for safety.
As is typical in horror stories, Rich, a doctor Annie met in pottery, and Britta are secretly hiding zombie bites, hoping to avoid turning or stay safe long enough to find a cure. They soon begin showing symptoms, which terrifies Chang. In a panic, he throws an ice skate through the door of the study room, letting even more zombies inside, and they quickly grab Annie and carry her away.
With the school overrun, only Jeff, Chang, Shirley, Troy, and Abed remain, and they get separated in the chaos. Chang and Shirley hide in a bathroom, while Jeff, Troy, and Abed find themselves in the basement. This split leads to a surprising moment: a hookup between Shirley and Chang. This event becomes relevant later in the episode “Cooperative Calligraphy,” when the group suspects Shirley might be pregnant.
Dean Pelton Caused the Zombies in “Epidemiology”
The students at Greendale who seemed to be turning into zombies weren’t actually infected – they just had really bad food poisoning from old military rations Dean Pelton had purchased for the party. When Dean called the store to complain, he mistakenly triggered a military code, and an army representative told him they would be arriving at Greendale within six hours.
However, those infected might not have much time – Rich explains that the infection and resulting high fever could cause brain damage within six hours if the fever isn’t brought down. Unfortunately, the thermostat to control the temperature is located outside, where the infected creatures are. Abed immediately offers to go fix it, asking Troy to help, but Troy declines. He’s decided to listen to Jeff and is trying to avoid Abed’s often risky and unusual ideas.
With their study group members falling to the zombies one by one, Jeff, Troy, and Abed briefly find safety in the basement. Abed is determined to reach the thermostat, but Jeff won’t help. Abed then suggests escaping through a small window, but Jeff dismisses the idea, not wanting to damage his suit. When Jeff tries the door instead, more zombies attack and overwhelm him, leaving Troy and Abed to face the danger alone.
Community Plays With Many Stereotypes of the Horror Genre
Similar to other stories about zombie outbreaks, this show is full of references to the genre. The episode, “Epidemiology,” directly addresses common horror tropes, like characters concealing injuries and arguing over survival strategies. However, the most memorable moment is likely when Abed tells Troy to escape through a window, urging him to be the “first black man to make it to the end.”
Luckily, Troy breaks free and finds Dean Pelton, who had locked everyone in the library while waiting for the military. Troy punches the Dean and rushes inside, wearing the Power Loader costume from Aliens – the half of the costume he and Abed had made before Jeff convinced Troy it was too geeky. Unfortunately, Troy’s homemade Power Loader isn’t effective against the “zombies,” and it’s quickly damaged as he tries to fight his way to the thermostat.
Troy’s attempt to complete his task is derailed when he encounters a zombie version of Abed – a familiar horror movie scenario. Abed bites Troy, and soon a funny chain reaction of other students joins in. Despite this, Troy manages to reach the thermostat and turn down the temperature before becoming a zombie himself. The sudden cold snaps the “zombies” out of it, and just as they’re recovering, the military arrives to erase everyone’s memory of the whole night in a comical fashion.
“Epidemiology” Set a High Bar for Halloween Episodes in Sitcoms
Although many shows try to be funny around Halloween, Community really raised the standard for incorporating horror themes. The only other sitcom that came close was It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, with their episode “The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre,” which featured wedding guests acting like zombies after a spiked drink. Both Community and It’s Always Sunny successfully combined a wild premise and comedic moments with horror elements, resulting in Halloween episodes that were both entertaining and a little spooky.
What makes the “Epidemiology” episode truly special is the unexpected soundtrack: Dean Pelton blasts ABBA throughout the entire Halloween party. The contrast between the upbeat songs like “Mamma Mia” and “Fernando” and the gruesome zombie effects creates a uniquely funny and disturbing atmosphere. Community was known for its inventive concept episodes, and while episodes like “Contemporary American Poultry” and “Modern Warfare” are often remembered, “Epidemiology” stands out as one of the show’s best – and one of the greatest Halloween episodes in sitcom history.
