Following the completion of the original Matrix trilogy, Keanu Reeves aimed to star in another popular genre film by taking the lead role in Constantine, which was based on a well-loved DC Comics character. When it was first released, the movie received somewhat mixed reactions and earned $230.8 million worldwide (much less than the Matrix films made), but over time, Constantine gained a dedicated fan base. This renewed interest has motivated the creators to work on a sequel, although Constantine 2 has been slow to develop. A major challenge has been the script, and Reeves recently shared some positive news about its progress.
While promoting his latest film, Good Fortune, Fandango asked Keanu Reeves for an update on Constantine 2. He shared, āFingers crossed. We received another draft of the script.ā He added, āWeāre going to present it to the studio and hopefully they will be pleased with it as well.ā
Will Constantine 2 Happen Now That a New Script is Complete?
Earlier this year, Constantine star Peter Stormare mentioned that Keanu Reeves wasnāt pleased with how the sequel was developing. It seems Reeves wasn’t satisfied with the scripts, which focused heavily on action. While it makes sense to utilize Reevesā action movie background, heās aiming for something different with Constantine 2. Instead of creating another film filled with over-the-top action, similar to John Wick, he wants to emphasize the supernatural aspects that make Constantine stand out among comic book films.
If a new Constantine 2 script is about to be shown to the studio, it likely means Keanu Reeves is satisfied with the latest version. The film can’t move forward without him, so itās important that he approves of the story’s path. Reeves hasn’t revealed any specifics about the script, but his apparent approval suggests the writers have reduced the amount of action compared to earlier drafts. By listening to Reevesā comments, the Constantine 2 team may have created a story that’s more realistic and focuses on characters, making the sequel stand out from the many superhero films currently being released.
The fact that there’s a new draft of Constantine 2 is encouraging, but it doesnāt automatically mean the movie will be made. Reeves and his team still need official approval from the studio, which is now DC Studios. As fans likely know, DC Studios co-head James Gunn requires final script approval before any project can start filming. The outcome of that discussion will determine the future of Constantine 2 – it might need significant revisions, which would delay filming even more. It will also be interesting to see where Constantine 2 fits into DC Studiosā plans. The current strategy is to release just 1-2 movies each year, prioritizing quality over a large number of releases. There are many DC projects currently in development, including several films within the DC Universe.
However, Gunn is still dedicated to the Elseworlds concept, which would allow filmmakers to create DC movies outside of the main universe’s established timeline. We’re already seeing this with the development of Matt Reevesā The Batman Part II, meaning Constantine 2 could also be part of this if Gunn approves the screenplay. Gunn doesnāt seem eager to quickly assemble the entire Justice League within the DCU, so a continuation of a beloved, classic film could earn a valuable release slot without disrupting his overall plan.
