Seven years after the events of the first game, the world in Control Resonant has drastically changed. With Manhattan in ruins and only Dylan Faden capable of fighting back against the growing paranormal threats, it’s no surprise that the enemies they face are now even more powerful.
In a recent developer update, senior gameplay animator Annika Lehtinen explained that the enemies in the game—The Hiss and The Mold—are more developed than those in the previous installment. She noted that while the first game primarily featured humans with different weapons, this time the team focused on creating distinct and complex characteristics for each of the two opposing factions.
Creative director Mikael Kasurinen explained that ‘The Hiss’ and ‘The Mold’ are factions players first encountered in the original game. He described them as equally dangerous, otherworldly forces, each with its own distinct identity, impact on the environment, and visual style.
According to art director Elmeri Raitanen, the team aimed for more than just a post-apocalyptic feel with Control Resonant. They also wanted players to truly experience The Mold as a threat from another dimension.
According to lead gameplay designer Sergey Mohov, Resonant represents a significant advancement in enemy design. Enemies now have clearly defined roles in combat and come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Both the Hiss and the Mold are more dangerous than before, and they’re designed to challenge players to use the appropriate weapons and abilities at the right moments.
According to Kasurinen, external factors seem to be affecting these individuals, making them more violent, aggressive, and unpredictable, which presents significant challenges.
They aren’t the most powerful creatures, though. The gameplay showed that players will also have to battle Resonants. Once defeated, you can bring these creatures back to the Gap – a special space inside Dylan’s mind – and turn them into new skills.
Now that Remedy has access to more tools, it’s natural they’ve created tougher enemies. We’re really looking forward to finding creative ways to defeat them when Control Resonant releases later this year on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
