Control Resonant’s Influences Include Southern Reach Series, The X-Files, Roadside Picnic, and More

Remedy Entertainment’s games – often called the Remedy-verse – are known for their intriguing and complex stories, drawing inspiration from sources like Twin Peaks (which influenced the Alan Wake series) and the SCP Foundation (a key influence on Control). The new game, Control Resonant, continues this tradition, and Remedy has released a video discussing the inspirations behind it and the broader series.

The new project clearly draws inspiration from The X-Files, swapping aliens for more mysterious, supernatural events. Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach novels – especially the first book, Annihilation, which was adapted into a highly praised film – also had a significant impact. Another key influence was Roadside Picnic, a novel that inspired Andrei Tarkovsky’s classic film Stalker, which in turn inspired the video game S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.

Remedy is probably holding back some details, but here’s what we know: after the Federal Bureau of Control couldn’t stop The Hiss, the city of Manhattan is in chaos. With the world facing destruction and Director Jesse Faden gone, her brother Dylan must try to fix everything.

Control Resonant is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. You can now watch a lengthy gameplay demonstration from the recent State of Play event.
