The new Harry Potter television series has sparked renewed interest in the Harry Potter universe, with Hollywood securing rights for a story that reinterprets the lives of the characters from the books in a seven-figure deal. Initially, the Harry Potter novels and their adaptations mainly followed the adventures of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and their time at Hogwarts. Although romantic relationships were present, they didn’t delve deeply into the love lives of these main characters. Since then, fans have turned to fan fiction to imagine various romantic character pairings, even including one with a member of the core trio and a primary antagonist. Now, this fan-fiction story focusing on that relationship is being made into a movie, undergoing changes before it hits the big screen.
The book titled “Alchemised,” penned by SenLinYu, is set for publication by Del Rey in the coming weeks. Initially created as a fan fiction featuring the romantic pairing of Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter series, it was first published under the title “Manacled” on Archive of Our Own (AO3). This story blends aspects of Harry Potter, the “Dramione,” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.” It gained considerable attention with over 10 million views on the platform and sparked conversations among book enthusiasts on TikTok.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary has purchased the rights to Alchemised for a substantial seven-figure sum, estimated to be around $3 million. This is reportedly one of the largest acquisitions of a new book’s film rights ever made. Legendary made a preemptive bid to secure the rights, hoping to outbid any competition, leading to a flurry of rapid negotiations. Following the announcement, author SenLinYu expressed enthusiasm about seeing the world they created in Alchemised brought to life on the big screen. “I am deeply honored by Legendary’s immense interest in the project and can’t wait to see the realm of Paladia come to life,” the author said in a statement.
Can Manacled Find Success as Alchemised?
As per the publisher, Alchemised is a tale set in a post-war dark fantasy realm where both alchemy and necromancy thrive. The protagonist of this story is Helena Marino, a healer who fought for the defeated faction and subsequently experienced memory loss before being taken captive. In the present day, the winners of the conflict – crooked guild families and necromancers – have dispatched her to the hideout of potent necromancers, who aim to pry information about the Resistance from Helena’s mind.
The upcoming release of “Alchemised” coincides with ongoing controversy surrounding JK Rowling and Harry Potter. Despite extensive revisions, the fact that Alchemised originated as a fan fiction for Harry Potter might cause issues for its forthcoming book adaptation. As Rowling’s public image has been tarnished by recent events, many fans are distancing themselves from Harry Potter. Critics have even criticized adult actors in the upcoming Harry Potter series for associating with a project that supports Rowling’s controversial views. Ultimately, it remains to be seen how the film will be received when it is finally released. In the meantime, Alchemised is scheduled to hit bookstores on September 23rd.
