Even though the first season of the Netflix thriller *Squid Game* finished in 2025, the story isn’t over yet. The reality competition spin-off, *Squid Game: The Challenge*, is returning for a second season next month, and we’ve gotten a first look. Expect plenty of emotional drama!
The second season of the reality show *Squid Game: The Challenge* is coming to Netflix in November, released in three parts. The first four episodes will be available on November 4th, followed by another four on November 11th, and the final episode on November 18th. This season has nine episodes, slightly fewer than the ten in the first season, which was won by Mai Whelan who took home a $4.56 million prize. She shared with Netflix a few years ago:
Returning to everyday life and not having to worry about being eliminated was a huge relief. I really needed a break after two and a half weeks of constant activity and emotional challenges. But despite everything, I’m still the same person – still Mai. I just feel stronger now.
Season 2 will feature familiar faces like Jason and Brett Oppenheim, Chrishell Stause, and Mary Bonnet, alongside new contestants. This season boasts a total of 456 players, and the show’s creators are pushing the boundaries of the original *Squid Game* with inventive challenges.
The reality show *Squid Game: The Challenge* faced criticism after its first episode, with some contestants reporting negative experiences. Several threatened legal action, claiming they suffered through harsh conditions during filming, including extreme weather and even nerve damage. These contestants described the conditions as “inhumane,” mirroring the brutal scenes in the original fictional *Squid Game*. Some observers found it strange that producers would recreate such difficult circumstances for the show.
We don’t know yet if any players from the first season will be back. While they were defeated—or, following the show’s logic, ‘eliminated’—anything is possible in the world of *Squid Game*. Just like the surprise appearance of Cate Blanchett at the end of the original series, unexpected things can happen.
The Original ‘Squid Game’ May Have Ended, But Its Cultural Impact Is Strong
Netflix is continuing to build on the success of *Squid Game*. While fans wait for news about a potential spin-off of the original Korean series and the American version directed by David Fincher, *Squid Game: The Challenge* offers a new way to experience the show’s intense competition. Although Season 2 hasn’t been released yet, Season 3 is already confirmed, and they’re currently looking for contestants in the U.S. and U.K. – you can find the application link here.
