Controversial X-Men Director Planning a Hollywood Return After 8 Years

As a movie buff looking back, I can’t help but marvel at Bryan Singer’s transformative impact on comic book movies. It all started with “X-Men” in 2000, where he breathed new life into the genre by treating the source material with a level of seriousness and thematic depth that was previously unheard of. His stellar work didn’t stop there; he continued to impress with the critically acclaimed sequel, “X2: X-Men United.”

Later, he ventured into another iconic franchise, directing “Superman Returns,” a heartfelt tribute to the classic Christopher Reeve films. Singer then made his way back to the mutant universe he helped create, steering the ships of “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

However, his career took an unexpected turn when a series of controversies led to his dismissal from the Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” eight years ago. This setback marked a prolonged absence from Hollywood for Singer. But now, the controversial director is planning a comeback with a new project that promises to bring him back into the cinematic limelight once more.

Based on a report from Variety, it’s been announced that singer Sylvester Stallone will re-enter the film industry with a previously secretly filmed movie shot in Greece in 2023. This upcoming film, a heartfelt drama about fathers and sons, stars Academy Award winner Jon Voight, famously known for roles in films like “Mission: Impossible” and “Coming Home”. The title of the project is yet to be revealed, but it’s set during Israel’s invasion and subsequent occupation of Lebanon in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Israeli filmmaker Yariv Horovitz, who directed “Rock the Kasbah”, is also part of the production team, though his specific role has not been disclosed yet.

According to one critic, Singer’s new mystery movie could be a contender for awards and is well-made. However, the film’s content is likely to stir up more debates as it’s described as “polarizing.” Reports suggest that an American distribution deal is about to be sealed, but no release date has been set yet.

Why Bryan Singer Hasn’t Made A Movie Since 2017

Bryan Singer’s departure from the limelight in Hollywood was prompted by numerous accusations of sexual misconduct, which he continuously denied and were never followed up with charges. Additionally, there were questions about his professional conduct on the set of his last film. In late 2017, Singer faced a significant career setback when 20th Century Fox dismissed him from Bohemian Rhapsody, with just a few weeks left before completion. The studio claimed that Singer was absent without notice after the Thanksgiving holiday. At the time, a THR report revealed a tumultuous atmosphere on set, with disputes between Singer and his actors, allegedly including an incident where Singer reportedly threw an object. However, Dexter Fletcher was eventually brought in to complete the film, despite Singer maintaining the sole directing credit on the award-winning blockbuster due to Directors Guild of America rules.

The hit movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” revived old claims of misconduct against Singer, which were made between 1997 and 2017. A comprehensive article published in “The Atlantic” in 2019 presented new accusers, resulting in Singer being removed from a planned “Red Sonja” film and taking a break from the spotlight. He has been living away from the public eye for several years now, residing in Israel.
