Coronation Street and BBC variety star Sheila Bernette dies aged 94

Former Coronation Street actress Sheila Bernette has died at the age of 94.

The beloved actress, famous for her roles in Coronation Street and the BBC’s Good Old Days, had a long and successful career. She worked with many famous performers, including Tommy Cooper, Sir David Jason, and Morecambe and Wise.

The Royal Variety Charity, which supports retired performers, announced that she had died.

In a statement to the Mirror, they shared that Sheila will be deeply missed by her colleagues and the broader theater community.

Sheila Poncini, known professionally as Bernette, was born in London to Italian parents. She became famous for her work on the show Good Old Days, appearing from 1968 to 1983. The show recreated the charm of Victorian and Edwardian music halls, featuring contemporary performers singing and acting out pieces from that time.

In the 1970s, Bernette played Sister Delaney on the popular TV show Coronation Street and also appeared on the British version of Candid Camera. She was also a performer in the Royal Variety Performance that decade.

Throughout her career, the actress appeared in several films, including Three For All, Driving Aphrodite, and the 1986 comedy Car Trouble. In Car Trouble, she acted alongside renowned British actors Julie Walters and Ian Charleson.

From 2008 to 2011, Bernette was known for her role as Mrs. Poshington on the CBBC show Hotel Trubble. She also appeared in the film Driving Aphrodite in 2009, which was her last film role.

Besides acting in television and movies, Bernette frequently performed at the Players’ Theatre in London’s Covent Garden.

Actor and friend Peter Kosta paid tribute to Bernette following the tragic news of her passing.

I recently came across a lovely story about a kindness that really stuck with me. Apparently, when I was first starting out and looking for a place to live, a woman named Sheila offered me a room. She was incredibly supportive, always believing in my dreams and making an effort to see whatever I was working on, even when it was tough for her to get there. I have such warm and cherished memories of her generosity and belief in me.

He remembered spending almost two hours with her before she died, reminiscing about times past. He said they’d been talking about old memories.

He added that she was “very funny” and “very feisty”.
