Coronation Street icon confirmed to be leaving soap 39 years after debut

Coronation Street star Sally Ann Matthews has confirmed that she is leaving the ITV soap.

Since 1986, the actor has intermittently portrayed beloved character Jenny Connor, also known as Jenny Bradley. Taking to social media, Matthews offered a heartfelt salute to the show upon making this announcement.

Originally, she had planned to remain there for five months, but she unexpectedly stayed for an additional ten years due to her profound affection for the place. Now, it’s time for her to explore roles that she dreamt of playing as an adult.

“Thanks Trafford Wharf Rd for the memories and endless laughter x”

An ITV spokesperson declined to comment further on the news when contacted by TopMob.

In 1986, Matthews began appearing on the show Coronation Street, portraying the character Jenny. Her storylines frequently revolved around her character’s relationship with her father Alan Bradley, played by Mark Eden, and foster mother Rita Tanner, played by Barbara Knox.

After departing in 1991, she briefly reappeared in 1993 but then fully resurfaced in 2015, and since then, she’s played an essential role on the cobbles.

Among her key storylines throughout the years, we find her stormy marriage with Johnny Connor (played by Richard Hawley), her dramatic act of kidnapping Kevin Webster’s (Michael Le Vell’s character) son Jack, and her tenure as the landlady at The Rovers Return.

In response to Matthew’s farewell message on social media, his fellow cast members and fans took to expressing their appreciation for the actor and voicing their sadness over the absence of Jenny from Weatherfield.

Todd Boyce, who portrayed the wicked character Stephen Reid on the soap opera, expressed: “I adore you and appreciate your fantastic performance as a Coronation Street lady. You’re handing over such a valuable legacy. It won’t be easy to match your act, Sal.

Meanwhile, Cathy Matthews star Melanie Hill added: “Onwards Sal… Corrie will miss you x”

Jenny has recently been confirmed as the latest character from long-running soap Corrie who is planning to leave. Previously, Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) and Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) departed, and it’s now known that Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) will also be leaving by the end of this year.

Delightfully, I’m thrilled to share that the talented Jane Hazlegrove, portraying Bernie Winter, has extended her contract for another season. Additionally, the illustrious Dame Maureen Lipman will grace our screens once more, reprising her role as Evelyn Plummer.
