Coronation Street icon signs up for another year with ITV soap 26 years after first episode

Okay, so I’m a big fan of Coronation Street, and I just heard some awesome news! Tina O’Brien – you know, Sarah Platt – has signed on for another year. Apparently, the writers have some really exciting stuff planned for her character in 2026, which I’m super excited about! It sounds like she’s going to be really central to some big storylines.

O’Brien first appeared in the role in 1999, replacing Lynsay King. She was involved in several major storylines during her initial run on the show, which lasted until 2008.

She came back after seven years and has been an important character ever since. Recent storylines have especially highlighted her complicated relationship with police detective Kit Green, played by Jacob Roberts, alongside other developing plots.

Sarah Platt, played by Tina O’Brien, is a long-standing character on Coronation Street – the daughter of Gail and sister of David. So, news that her contract has been renewed, as reported by The Sun, isn’t unexpected for fans.

According to a source speaking to the tabloid, Tina experienced a tough 2025, including the loss of her father in November, and her employers wanted to assure her that her job was secure.

She started writing shortly before the Christmas holiday. There’s been a lot happening recently, and they didn’t want her to stress about her job on Coronation Street.

Okay, so things are shifting around at ITV. There are some cast changes happening, and they’re tweaking the schedule this month. The big news? They’re planning a special crossover episode between Emmerdale and Coronation Street – they’re calling it ‘Corriedale’ – and it’s going to kick off what they’re calling an ‘ITV power hour’ of soaps. As a long-time soap fan, I’m genuinely curious to see how that works out!

O’Brien will appear in an upcoming episode of Corriedale, which will feature a dramatic car crash. Kit and Carla (Alison King) will be among those responding to the accident.

According to the source, O’Brien is well-liked by everyone on set, and her character is poised for some major storylines this year.
