Coronation Street villain Carl Webster eyes up vulnerable local in ITVX release

It’s amazing how much trouble Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) has caused since joining Coronation Street just nine months ago. He’s already created a lot of drama, and it doesn’t look like he’ll be changing his ways anytime soon.

Following the end of his brother Kevin’s marriage to Abi, he started a new affair with James Bailey.

The affair came to light right before Debbie (Sue Devaney)’s wedding, and Abi was determined to get even and stop him from running away to Germany.

I was reading about this incredible case – a guy had swiped a ton of money from the Chariot Square Hotel, and was practically home free when disaster struck. He got tangled up in a massive car crash just as he was about to get away! It’s the kind of thing you’d see in a movie, honestly.

Carl, facing charges for driving under the influence, manipulated Debbie into thinking she had caused the death of their neighbor, Billy Mayhew. He did this by making it appear as though she was responsible, even though he was the one driving.

We eventually found out why Debbie hadn’t defended herself: she was terrified of a major secret coming out – she’s actually Carl’s mother, not his sister.

Completely cut off from everyone else in Weatherfield, it looks like things aren’t going to improve for the troubled Webster.

Today, though, he started a new flirtation, this time with Jodie Ramsey, played by Olivia Frances Brown.

Julia Goulding, who plays Shona Platt, first appeared on Corrie after fleeing a possible kidnapping orchestrated by Graham Foster.

She’s settled in with the Platts, who are unaware of how she became involved in the recent car accident. Earlier this week, she told Shona a story – word-for-word – about surviving domestic abuse, and Shona believed her completely.

We have no idea why she’s lying, or why we’ve seen her attempt to taint Shona’s good character.

Ever since arriving at number 8, Jodie has mostly spent her days relaxing on the sofa. She seems afraid of encountering Graham or Kit Green (Jacob Roberts), who is determined to find out what she was escaping from.

After some encouragement, Jodie went to the cafe to lend a hand while Nina Lucas went to get supplies.

Carl was attracted to Leanne and used the excuse of buying her a drink to start a conversation. They quickly connected, but their moment was interrupted by Abi’s arrival.

She was shocked to see Carl cosying up to Jodie, and warned her against pursuing anything.

At the hospital, Shona explained to her husband, David, that she was trying to find her father to understand what was causing Jodie’s distress.

Is this a fresh start for Carl, or will he begin to scheme with Jodie?

Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
