Coronation Street’s Lou Michaelis exits once again as prison storyline for Debbie Webster ends

Another favourite has left the Coronation Street cobbles.

Lou Michaelis (played by Farrel Hegarty) left the ITV soap after a tense prison scene, just over a year after she first appeared on the show.

The character and her husband, Mick (played by Joe Layton), arrived as the new, troublesome neighbors on Mawdsley Street. They moved in right across the alleyway from Chesney and Gemma Winter-Brown (Sam Aston and Dolly-Rose Campbell).

Lou caused trouble for the people of Weatherfield and was eventually imprisoned for attacking Gary Windass, whom she had become fixated on. At the same time, Mick was jailed for the violent killing of PC Craig Tinker, whom he struck with a baseball bat.

Hegarty returned to her part for a short time earlier this year when Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) went to prison for causing a fatal accident while driving dangerously.

Debbie admitted responsibility for a car crash involving multiple vehicles – an event featured in the special crossover episode between the TV shows Coronation Street and Emmerdale. She did this to shield her son, Carl (played by Jonathan Howard), even though he didn’t understand why she would take the blame for his actions, as he still believed she was his sister.

After finding out she had pretended to be his birth mother for nearly four decades, he vowed to ensure she spent the rest of her life in prison.

Debbie unexpectedly befriended her cellmate, Lou. Lou has been reaching out to Debbie’s former sister-in-law, Sally Metcalfe, to talk about Sally’s worsening memory problems, as she was recently diagnosed with early-onset dementia.

Lou discovered Debbie was very upset earlier this week. Her journal, which she relies on to remember things, was missing, and she believed a police officer had taken it.

Debbie caused a disturbance, and Lou was concerned it might affect her upcoming court hearing. To avoid the consequences, Debbie intentionally started a fight with the most powerful inmate, Paula (Kelli Hollis), which resulted in her being put in solitary confinement.

Debbie was riddled with guilt, and even more so when she found the journal in her cell.

This episode marked the end of Lou’s time in Corrie, but could we see her again one day?

Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm and from 7am on ITVX.
