Corriedale director reveals “nerve-racking” challenges filming Coronation Street and Emmerdale crossover

Fans of Coronation Street and Emmerdale are in for a surprise: the two popular ITV soaps are crossing over for a one-time event filled with drama, including shocking deaths, chaos, and betrayals.

The storyline, developed by Executive Producer Iain Macleod, involves a major car crash on a dark, stormy road between the towns of Weatherfield and Hotten.

It was surprisingly stressful. We’ve worked on this project for six months, and I’m incredibly familiar with every detail – every line, every scene, even every breath the actors take, he explained.

We filmed for a total of 14 nights. This includes two nights dedicated to scenes filmed before the main driving sequences, some of which you’ll see in the introductory segments.

We also used this idea in the opening titles – just showing headlights approaching each other – to create the impression the story was set in the Pennine hills.

We were incredibly lucky with the weather. Considering the wreckage remained for twelve nights, it only rained once, which was a huge relief.

That night, during the explosion, we managed to pause operations while the heavy rain passed, and we were still able to finish everything and set off the main blast.

Duncan mentioned he captured a stunning sunrise photo over the damaged area, a shot he could only get at that specific moment.

Finally, just as the sun was rising, we got a single success. It was one night – or morning – where we knew we’d achieve it, he explains.

I’ll never forget being in that field at 4 in the morning. It was so cold I couldn’t feel my feet. Everyone was gathered there, looking up at the clear, starry sky. I just kept thinking, since there weren’t any clouds, we had a real chance.

The sunrise shot was the most stressful moment of the whole filming process. I really wanted to capture it for the ending because it symbolized a return to normalcy, with each world going its separate way.

“And it left you with a slightly positive feeling. And wow, we got it. It was incredible.”

Corriedale airs on Monday 5th January 2025 at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with no early release on ITVX.

He’s their Soaps Editor, and honestly, he knows everything that’s happening in all the big shows – from Coronation Street and EastEnders to Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. Before TopMob, he was a Soaps Reporter at Metro for a couple of years, and even better, he actually worked on the sets of Corrie and Emmerdale! So he really knows his stuff.
