Although the Doctor Who Christmas special is still some time off, fans are already speculating about what might happen, especially whether David Tennant, who played the Tenth and Fourteenth Doctors, will return in future episodes.
Russell T Davies, the showrunner, is writing the upcoming Christmas special. This follows a surprising reveal: Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor regenerated into Billie Piper, who fans will remember as Rose Tyler, a previous companion.
David Tennant and Russell T Davies have both stated the Fourteenth Doctor has retired, so why are fans speculating about a return? There are a few reasons fueling those rumors.
Of course, no details have been announced about the special and this is all speculation.
Will David Tennant return to Doctor Who at Christmas? All the clues and theories
The Doomsday tease

A new post on the official Doctor Who website sparked speculation among fans that the upcoming Christmas special could be a continuation of the popular episode, ‘Doomsday’.
The post reminded logged-in users of the “Rose Tyler (2006 Cold case)”.
Just a heads-up: Rose Tyler is currently missing and causing some weird disturbances in space-time, so please be vigilant. I’ve tasked the Vlinx with monitoring all media and the subwave network for any sign of her.
It makes you wonder why “Doomsday” is being mentioned at this moment – perhaps there’s an underlying reason we don’t know about yet.
The Doctor Who socials have been celebrating David Tennant big time

Okay, so here’s the deal with this video. It’s hosted on YouTube, and before it plays, the site needs your okay to load it. This is just a heads-up that YouTube, like many sites, uses cookies and tracking tech. If you’re comfortable with that, hit ‘Accept and continue’ and you’ll be able to watch. It’s a standard privacy thing, really.
Fans have noticed that the official Doctor Who social media has been posting a lot about David Tennant, including a recent share of his original season trailer with the classic logo. BBC Three also joined in the celebration with their own ‘Tennant at Twenty’ event.
There are several possible explanations for this. It’s always a good moment to celebrate the Doctor! This year also marks the 20th anniversary of his first complete season playing the Doctor, which could be the reason behind it.
But could it also be teeing us up for a return? Very possibly.
The Fourteenth Doctor is still around

The special episode celebrating the show’s 60th anniversary, “The Giggle,” confirmed that the Fourteenth Doctor is still active on Earth, and is now adventuring with Mel Bush, played by Bonnie Langford.
Given the possibilities within Doctor Who, it’s logical that the Fourteenth Doctor could encounter the Sixteenth Doctor, especially if Niamh Blackshaw is playing that role. It would be a wonderful experience for fans who enjoyed David Tennant and Billie Piper’s chemistry originally, as they clearly still have a great rapport.
The situation gets a little complicated because David Tennant has strongly suggested his time as the Fourteenth Doctor is over and he doesn’t intend to come back to the show in the near future. However, he has surprised us before…
Tennant is a huge Doctor Who fan

Given David Tennant’s well-known passion for Doctor Who, it’s no surprise he’s back for another appearance.
The actor, a lifelong fan of the show, recently rushed to see the newly found episodes of The Daleks’ Master Plan and has always been open about his affection for it.
Could that influence him to return again? Stranger things have happened!
Doctor Who will return this Christmas on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
