Could Neighbours return? Producer discusses soap’s future after cliffhanger ending

The final ever episode of Neighbours has streamed today, after 40 years on air.

It’s disappointing for the show’s many fans worldwide to see it end, especially because the final story arc is designed to be a definitive conclusion.

This situation last occurred in 2022 when the British channel 5 reduced its financial support, which led to the program being cancelled.

The wedding concluded what was considered the final episode, and brought together many beloved characters from Ramsay Street, including the famous couple Scott and Charlene Robinson, played by Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue.

Even though the story doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon (at least not on TV or in movies), fans can take heart knowing that all the characters they love found happiness.

This time, things are different. The studio where Neighbours was filmed for 39 years has been returned to its owner. There’s still a major issue about whether the famous street set will be torn down to make way for a new highway, and it seems the characters will likely go their separate ways.

Even so, Jason Herbison, the show’s executive producer, thinks a revival is possible, though it would look quite different from the original. He just needs a network or streaming service to believe in his vision.

How did you approach the 2025 finale differently from the 2022 one?

I envisioned a way to revive the show, maybe with a spin-off or a short, focused series. The finale hints at the possibilities for future storylines and different directions the show could take.

Which characters would you like to see in their own spin-off series?

With the cancellation of Neighbours, there’s a real chance for two new spin-off shows to be created: Ramsay Hills and Robinson Towers!

We discuss potential storylines for the remaining episodes. The new suburb of Ramsay Hills would feel familiar to fans of shows like Neighbours.

Robinson Towers is a modern hotel and apartment building located in central Melbourne, offering a high-rise urban lifestyle.

I imagine a future where both shows have short seasons that switch off – when one finishes, the other starts. It would be fun to see characters from both worlds interact, and maybe even revisit Ramsay Street if it’s still there. You never know, it could happen someday!

What other formats would you be interested in as a way of carrying on Neighbours?

There are so many things I could do! I’m thinking about making a Christmas movie, but I’m also really enjoying the projects I’m working on right now.

The show is beloved and anything could happen.

Are the team still actively pursuing the chance to bring Neighbours back?

We’re happy to discuss this further. While it’s probably not realistic to go back to the way things were, we’re always open to having a conversation about it.

If ‘Neighbours’ came back, would you want to produce it again, or would you prefer to let someone else take over?

I’ll always care about the brand’s success, but I’m not sure if I’ll be the one leading it going forward. It really depends on my career path and where it takes me.

I wanted to wrap things up nicely and leave the story open for many different directions, not just the ones I’ve talked about. Creating a long-running drama is a massive undertaking.

I enjoy the artistic process, but dealing with the business side of things can be overwhelming. I’m really glad to be taking a step back from that demanding schedule.

If another broadcaster is considering Ramsay Hills or Robinson Towers, I’m happy to discuss my ideas for them.

Could a new soap opera succeed in today’s television environment and run for as many years as Neighbours did?

TV has changed a lot since shows like Neighbours first came on the air. It’s hard to predict what will happen next – and honestly, that’s the best answer anyone can give.

Honestly, I think TV is moving towards shorter seasons with fewer episodes, and that makes sense to me. We’re so far past the days when people only had a handful of channels – that’s how daytime soaps originally became so popular, because everyone was watching the same limited options. Those days are gone, and I don’t see them coming back, so shows need to adapt.

Neighbours is available to stream on Prime Video.
