It seems there’s been a pause in the Crash Bandicoot series since the launch of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, but whispers have circulated about a potential Crash Bandicoot 5 that was allegedly scrapped. Recently, some concept art has emerged, which appears to be related to the development of Crash Bandicoot 5. This artwork has been attributed to Microsoft, developer Toys for Bob, and artist Nicholas Kole, and it’s been discovered through an investigation led by Hector Lizard and Liam Robertson.
It’s rumored that the fifth installment in the Crash Bandicoot series could have been named “Crash Bandicoot 5: The Academy of Evil”. Concept art for the allegedly cancelled game provides insights into its features, such as new settings, stages, and characters. The entire game appears to be centered around the Academy of Evil, with a concept image suggesting that it would serve as the hub level, potentially leading to other levels within the game. Examining the character designs and names depicted in the concept art hints that the storyline could have delved into the backstory and personal life of recurring Crash Bandicoot villain Dr. Neo Cortex.
In the upcoming game, it appears that several characters may make an appearance, including Mama Cortex, Cerebella Cortex (sister), Hugh G Cortex (elder brother), and ID (nephew). Additionally, there’s a new character named Madame Amberly whose family relation to the Cortex family isn’t evident from her concept art alone.
In certain areas, you’ll encounter the artistic depictions of Tiny Tiger’s dream castle, his lair, tower, treasure chamber, and where a battle with Tiny Tiger would have transpired. The design of Tiny Tiger’s levels appears to be inspired by a castle theme, whereas Pinstripe seems to draw inspiration from noir and gangster movies for his stages. A final piece of concept art suggests that Crash Bandicoot 5 might have featured a young Neo Cortex forming some kind of bond, as it shows Crash and Neo attempting to flee from a circus-like dreamscape together.
It’s important to keep in mind that, as this appears to be early conceptual artwork for a game that didn’t make it to production, it should be viewed with some skepticism.
Last year, whispers spread about the potential development and subsequent cancellation of Crash Bandicoot 5. A report from July 2024 revealed that if the game had gone ahead, it would have showcased artwork by illustrator and character artist Nicholas Kole, who shared on social media that the project was scrapped. Nicknamed Project Dragon within the development team, it wasn’t a new Spyro game as confirmed by Kole when asked on social media.
It’s been speculated that there might have been a fusion between the worlds of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, as suggested by some whispers. A report from August 2024 hinted at internal ideas and proposals for Crash Bandicoot 5, which included the possibility of Spyro the Dragon serving as a secondary playable character.
